Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
We are getting ready for our fair this week so most of my time has been spent with the animals. We are trimming our 5 goats today for the show on Thursday morning. I did do something truck related this weekend though. I went to my bro-in-laws yesterday and we installed a set of 4.56's and a mini spool in his truck. The new solid roller 406 should like the new gears much better than the 3.07's we replaced. We were lucky. i reused the same pinion shim from the original gear and the contact pattern is perfect for a 69 series Richmond gear . I set it up at 20-25 inch pounds rotating force on the pinion since we replaced all the bearings . It has been a while since I set any gears up so it was fun. Lots of work but fun. We were able to get the backlash to right at .009 and the gear called for .010 so I left it there . It should work pretty good for him. I cant wait to see the difference . he is going to add fluid and break the gear in today. Back to the goat trimming .

I worked 85 hours and found the time to drop my truck off to someone who has time to work on it. It could come back this week. :fingers crossed:

Rained here all weekend so outside activities were a no go. Spent most of Saturday in the garage cleaning and putting things away.
My '50 is now in black primer and pretty much done. I'll post pictures when/if it ever stops raining. Took the Heap out today and showed her off to some childhood friends I hadn't seen in 40 years, had a nice time.

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
Its starting to feeling a little like Fall in our part of the country. So I decided to install a new thermostat and flush the coolant in my truck.
Sometime in the next week or two, I need to check my front suspension. I am having a bouncy vibiration around 45 mph. I hope that it is just something simple, because I am not ready to redo/rebuild the entire suspension (have to wait on $$).

Took my old quadrajet off and put on my new Holley Street avenger 670 cfm. It all went pretty well, was adjusted correctly right out of the box.

I have that same carb on 2 of my trucks, love them. You're correct, right out of the box they were darn near perfect.

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
New front brakes on my crewcab. That went fairly easy, once the parts store got the correct calipers.
Turned out the passenger side flex hose was stopped up, though, and that's where things got ugly. At some point somebody cross-threaded the hard line into the flex hose where it passes through the frame, in addition to rounding off the flare nut. Took several hours and butchering both the line and the hose to get everything apart. And I haven't tried to do the driver's side yet. Hoping to round up some new hard line and get it back together this week. So much for a quick Saturday afternoon brake job. |

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
Got around to pulling my blown up 350. It broke a rod and busted the camshaft. I guess that would cause it not to run anymore.
Also started messing around with a 1977 350. 010 block, 4 bolt main. Put new rod bearings in it, got a Weiand aluminum intake and an Edelbrock 1407 carburetor. Also got the new motor installed today, along with a brand new clutch, and motor mounts.

Put new carpet in, but will have to remove it to have it painted. Also insulated the floor.

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
Went 80 miles away to a swap meet and didn't find much of anything. I did get a great deal on a hose real for the shop.
Last night i'm glancing through craigslist and see a guy selling like new tires 235 /255/ 70 tires and 7 / 8 rallys like I want for the Burban until I can afford what I really want. Turns out they were 15min from where the swapmeet was so I drove 70 miles to go get them. Spent about 4 hours scraping and cleaning 34 years of grime and caked grease off a 454 from the truck I parted out. Finished up with Purple Power. That is by far the best cleaning product I have ever used. Don't look at the pan its not being reused. I wish I had taken a before pic but I forgot to. Picture it solid black with 1/8 to 1/4 thick muck covering it. |

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
I worked on a fellow board member's burb and the rest of the weekend took a CHL class with some friends. Today was the shooting proficiency portion. I passed the class, now to get all the paperwork together so I can get my license. My buddy that taught the class is Special Forces and really gave a great prospective on it all. The class was very informative, I'm glad I finally decided to take it.

I bought a used tire for my truck. It's a big step. It also led to 2 new ones.

Got my new set of 10" rallys painted and new 295/50 BFG's mounted and bolted up on the rear of my '79 GMC. I gave the front rallys a fresh coat of paint early this morning, hoping to get them back on the truck by tomorrow.

you get those rallies from summit? the 295's tucked in without touching the frame rails? I ask because I am thinking about going this route with mine.

Re: What did you get done th is week 9/19/11 edition
Started working on putting electric window motors in my crew cab from doors. Woke up at 2pm from a long night before and then played xbox with some friends so it was a late start. Worked on it for an hour before I ended up going out to dinner and drinking a few to many and didn't want to mess something up. So it is sitting taken apart until tomorrow.
