Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
So I'm deciding how I want to go about fixing up the bed of my new project (69 C10 longbed) and I was wondering is it frowned upon to use rhinoliner or hurculiner on an old truck like this?
My plan was to bang out as many dents as I could, remove the tiny bit of rust that's there, use bondo to fill in whatever I need to, sand, get it primed and painted but have them just prime the inside of the bed not paint it. Then I figured I'd probably save some money and go with hurculiner, I've read a lot of good reviews on them. Am I going about that generally the right way? This is my first foray into a project like this so tell me if I'm way off base. Oh, and the reason I want the bed lined is because I plan to be doing a lot of outdoors stuff with this truck and I'm looking for functionality as much as I am for looks. |

I don't see it as frowned upon at all, especially if you plan on using the truck. I'm not familiar with any of the liner brands, but one thing I've seen that I like is when the liner is tinted to match the color of the paint.

In my case, I don't like the liner because I don't like anything on the bed of my truck that's permanent. In your case since you're going to use it for hauling and for work and since it's already banged up, go for it. |

Haha, I thought maybe that'd be one sentiment! I guess it is pretty permanent though, any idea how hard it'd be to remove if it ever came down to that? Yeah, I am kind of opting for the easy way out with this liner too, isntead of spending a lot of time fixing the bed I'll just get it up to snuff and cover it up. And yeah I'm very prone to throwing loads of misc things in the back of my truck. |

Re: Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
the WALMART brush-on liners work fine as long as youre not throwing engine blocks/steel beams etc in the bed... otherwise they get scratched up. (easy repair) ive used it in both my k1500s and love it but then im just hauling motorcycles and stuff... nothing thats gonna dig it up...if you want to really abuse it and not worry about it then get the RHINO LINING (1/4" thick) ..

That's exactly what I did, with al's liner. It's about $100 a gallon, but is some serious tough stuff.

I say do what you like, if you want a bed liner go for it. if it's a used bed by all means protect it. I'm partial to a oak wood bed, but that's not very practical for hauling anything but A**..

A few questions, how did you apply it, with a spray gun or by rolling it on? Also, I see you came up and over the top of your bed, you managed to keep it perfectly straight though, were you just using painters tape or something? I might not come up all the way like you, just keep it inside the bed so you can't really see it at a glance. |

Re: Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
i feel the bedliner lowers resale value of a classic truck
i personally would not buy a truck that has been bedlinered

Re: Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
^ Yeah, I also wouldn't buy a vintage truck bed with liner on it. Primarily because I wouldn't know what's under it. Could be used to hide imperfections.
Once you put it on, consider it permanent. I've seen some trucks with badly faded liners and one that wasn't done correctly and rusted under the liner. The owner said that he hauled mineral and salt blocks for cattle and evidently this stuff got under the liner through some cracks. These were work trucks so the owners weren't concerned about it. |

Yes, I taped it off, and pulled it immediatley after shooting it. If you do the al's liner... Prep, prep, prep, as per instructions! Cover everything within 20' of your bed. You will never use the clothing you are wearing again, ever. Shoes too! Buy, and use a really good respirator! Full face preferred (watery eyes sux) Be 100% commited to spray, when you mix it up. It cures FAST! Dont attempt to clean the gun. Flip it over on cardboard and forget it until tomorrow, it will peel right out. Shoot sides, then front, then back out while doing the floor. do not fill the hopper over 1/2, until doing the floor. All tape comes off as soon as you set the gun down. That's about it |

This is excellent information. I'll have to save this for later. I have every intention of seeing to it that several folks on this board will never buy my truck....

You can tint it with color - see the web site. For a driver / hauler truck - not a bad idea. But, might want to keep the liner / paint info around in case you have to touch up at a later date.

Re: Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
I'm planning on using al's liner on both of my trucks.
When I had my 68 painted I didn't have them paint the inside of the bed, cause this has been the plan for awhile. I tubbed the rear wheel wells, so once I bed line it, it should look real nice! If you don't want to do it yourself, I've heard that LineX is a better product than Rhino, but I've never had either. |

in the 2011 silverado ltz we went with http://www.linex.com/pages/2010/bedliners/ in black and had the rear wheel wells sprayed at the same time. light use so far. truck is run like a show truck.

Re: Is it bad form to use rhinoliner/hurculiner?
Two schools of thought invade my damaged brain: 1....show trucks that are spot-on should not have a spray-in bed liner if you want to do some serious competition. 2....if you use it like the truck it is, then what's the beef? I've seen some nice trucks that also had spray-in liners...not the Rust-0-Leum stuff, but Rhino, Line-X or Vortex. I have Vortex in mine and that's just the way it is, at my house.

I'm pretty sure using permanent bed liner on your truck is against the board rules, along with cutting your dash for a radio.
Yes Im kidding.
