Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

I would like to see some pictures of your suspension setups for 60-66 4x4's.

Mine (see post #83 in thread below) just doesn't look like it is supposed to be that way. I didn't think of it last night, but will look in my manual when I get home.

The front coil spring mounts look like they may be stock, but one of them has part of the spring still on it, above the leaf springs.

The rear suspension looks all off. There are extra bump stops, and extra shock mounts, etc.

Thanks!!!

I think that's where the rubber bumpstops go on mine. I will take a look and try to get a pic later.

63GENIII I hadn't thought about that. I'll bet you are right. I don't recall seeing and bumpstops in the front end. I'll look in the morning.

I still wonder what the cut off spring is for.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

The rear lift blocks are the correct factory for the 4x4 but its looks like some one has swap the rear hence the double shock mount and bump stops IMO.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

I read over your first build thread and looked at the pics again and I'd agree with DuallyJams that there was a rear swap at some point. The lower (unused) shock mounts on the rear axle are where my shocks mount on the '63 and my blocks don't have the "arm" that your shocks are mounted to. I'm no expert for sure but I've never seen those. In reading your build thread, you mentioned it was a plow truck so I think your guess that the leftover spring in the front WAS in fact some sort of overload seeing as it is a 1/2 ton and had a plow on it. I will try to get pics today although I may have to email them to you or pm them to you.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Dually Jams and 63GENIII thanks for the info.

Pictures would be great GenIII.

The diff cover says "74 F@rd", so I wonder if the stole one from that. If they did, I will have to verify the front and rear have the same gearing.

Thanks guys!

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Here's what I think (merely conjecture):

Front
I'm guessing there was a factory option for overload springs on the front. I say this because it looks like the bump stop brackets are riveted onto the frame rails. It wouldn't be uncommon for these trucks to have been purpose built for things like plows. With this option they relocated your bump-stops rear-ward and added the brackets for the coil...

Rear
Obviously your rear axle isn't stock. I think the lift blocks with lower damper mount, and the upper mount crossmemeber must be stock for the earlier models (I'm guessing 60-62, remembering that the 4x2 frames were a different "X" style these years). This is why the rear bump stops don't match up.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

There are some minor differences in the 60-66 4by years. Your front is correct, rear axle is not stock, another thing i can point out is your transfercase shifter is to the right of your transmission shifter, this is correct for 1960 only.

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately the rear end says '74 F@rd on the diff cover.

Where is Aerotruck? He will know if the overload was a factory option. He pulls info out of his library for just about anything on here!!

Thanks for pointing that out J.kirn! I hadn't noticed that.

I love this site!!

It should be pretty easy to pull a leaf sprung 12-bolt rear axle assembly out of a later model pickup and swap it in.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Nacked front end. The rubber snubbers / bump stops are directly above the center of the front axle on this 64 Chevrolet K10 Canadian built frame of mine. By the way the 64 front K10 rubber snubber is the same as the C10 rear diff snubber on my 63. The snubber mount is to the outside of the frame.

Rear shock location. The rubber snubber you have on your front springs are the same as what I removed in the rear of the 64. They must have beaten the crap out of this truck every bump stop had bottomed out.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Timbren supplied GM with their rubber spring suspension enhancers in the early sixties. I spoke to Timbren and while they supplied the rubber springs they did not supply the brackets.

1964 GMC

My build thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=397681

From the Timbren.com site. This is for the rear C10 which would be the equivalent for the K10 front though the bracket would have to be modified.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Thanks Aerotruck!!
On the first picture you posted there is an * by the text FLEETSIDE PICKUP MODEL K2534 with special snow plow equipment. Does that refer to the * on the second picture by the Custom Features?

I can see the shock mounts are like mine, so at least the '60 GMC and the '63 Chevy are the same setup… I think?

63GenIII e-mailed me pictures of his ’63 and it has rear shocks like the ’64 and ’66, but he also has a D@dge rear end in it too. I can't tell in the pictures he sent if there is the same crossmember that my shocks are mounted to. If it is OK with him I will post up his pictures here also, just for other people in the future to reference.

Your ’64 K10 and Argonaut’s ’66 appear to have the same setup, with the brackets on the inside of the frame rails.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

* I would say that is what it's referring to.

One thing though, in GM literature they would borrow off previous years illustrations and perhaps add a little detail pertaining to the subject at hand. The illustrations in the parts books require your discretion as well. While it may be information for 1963, the illustrations could be from the year to years previous.

In 63, Chevrolet created a lot of new parts into the C10. New engines, Transmissions and differentials, however the K10 retained the 235/261 and other parts. On top of that some parts were changed during the 63 production year thus when you read in the parts books there are early and late designations.

1964 had the new engines/diffs and transmissions from the two wheel drive line.

1963 Chevrolet Chassis Builders Book.
This book has a series of measurements for coach builders and other manufactures to go by when designing stuff to put onto stock Chevrolet trucks. See the shocks mount facing forward in the technical drawing.

Re: Pictures of 60-66 4x4 Suspension Please

Hey Jason thanks for putting those up! My shocks are mounted to the frame rails by way of a stud that's on a riveted bracket on the frame. They are both facing the same direction (foward) and are mounted to the axle the same as the original. In fact, I cut the lower mounts off the original axle and welded them onto the D60.

Aero. You say that the shocks on your '62 were mounted the same a Jason's? That '62 was pretty nice! Not to thread jack here, but did it also have a moonroof? Too cool!

There was this girl ( Lynda , see step passenger side) I wanted so badly, to date, but she said she wouldn't go out with me unless truck had the moonroof and steps on the side with her name on it. So the next day I installed the moonroof and steps and went by her place and we were together for 9 months! She started dating by best friend at the time while seeing me. Great... years of therapy and you have to dredge that all back up, couldn't just leave it alone, had to drag me back to the worst time in my life. hope your happy! LMAO

ROFLMAO!! I'm sorry Norm I had no idea. If it makes you feel any better, I sold a '57 Napco 1 ton because the girl I wanted to date wouldn't ride in it... said it was too bumpy. I think that "relationship" lasted even less time than yours, but I've been questioning my own sanity over that for the last 20 years!! The stupid things we do for women. I'd say you got stuck with the better end of the deal!
