700R4 into a 71 K10?
Happy Thanksgiving gents. Quick question for ya. Looking at a 71 K10 Cheyenne. Kind of a neat truck - it is an end of the year build truck and the original owner included the Cheyenne Super pkg. Super's were primarily a 72 deal. Anyhoo, thinkin that makes it kinda special, but not real hardover on an all original truck - it's missing the original 350 anyway... All I know is it's an automatic, unknown if TH350 or 400 - I believe both were available in K10s(?) or was it just TH350s in K10s?
Here's my question - never done this in a 4x4 before: Is there room between motor and transfer case to swap in a 700R4? They are several inches longer, so just curious if it's possible. Thanks, jocko |

Only th350s were available from the factory.
The stock engine position on a 4x4 is further back than on a 2wd. To use a 700r4 you need the Advanced Adapters 700r4 in place of a th350 output shaft in the trans and you need to move the engine forward the 2 or so inches the OD trams is longer than the th350. Ok, so I haven't had a 67-72 in over 20 yrs... When it says "move the engine fwd 2" " that seems easier said than done, even if the stock 4x4 350 is mounted further aft than normal. what exactly is getting moved fwd on the crossmember? The thread made it sound like the whole crossmember is being moved fwd... which does not make sense to me. Can someone break this down to a "Moving the engine forward 2" for Dummies" answer? (thanks!) |

My read is that they are basically leaving the T-case in its stock location to prevent driveline mods.. Seems like it is simply a matter of adapting the trans. and bolting it up while sliding the engine frame mounts fwd.~2". Makes sense as it is a 6cyl. engine bay.
Of course, there is always the thought that the LSX is about 2" shorter than the stock 350..... :-)

I've emailed the gent, but haven't heard back from him yet. I really like the truck, it's not perfect, but it's a well-used work truck with only 40 some thou miles on it. And it's a K10 Super, probably my favorite combo - but it definitely has my favorite color/interior combo on it, that much is for certain. Not crazy about the dual aux tanks, but I could easily live with it. Can tell the guy is a gearhead and took care of it, check out the 70 Chevelle in the background of one of the pics... I guess I'm still a little cornfused about sliding motor mounts fwd, wouldn't that require drilling new holes in the crossmember? Am sure there is room in the front to slide it fwd since it's already mounted aft of the 2WD V8, but still fuzzy about "sliding" the mounts fwd. Thanks again for all the replies! I just noticed you're in Edwards CA - as in the tiny town of Edwards just north of Edwards AFB or some other Edwards I'm not familiar with? Small world, I used to live there! Now up at Chinese Lake, for the 3rd time. Love the desert. |

Here are some Blazer pictures that show the engine install.... sort of. Anyway look at the circled bolts and see how they could very well go a little forward. The engine frame mounts on a 4X4 do not tie into the suspension crossmember like a 4X2. Such is the fun of conversions. Haven't done one but I see what they are saying. Spend some more time doing a search through the forums and more info/pictures may pop. Think EAFB as close and south gate as closer yet. Been in the desert 26 years now.

This is all great info. I've been thinking of the same trans swap for my 71 4x4, and now understand it's not as straightforward as I thought. Would be a lot simpler to change out the differentials to taller gears.

Ha! Thanks very much Tim - I've had a beverage or two at the Wing and a Prayer out the south gate. Desert kinda grows on ya. Thanks again for the help. I have a much better understanding of what I'd be in for. So, it would appear that the "approach" would to be install the engine last (after installing the TH350-like output shaft in the 700R4) and then seeing where the mounts line up and "drill baby drill!!)
Trying to think what else that might hose up in the process, but seems as long as it's not hitting the radiator that the ps hoses, fuel lines, etc etc etc could almost all accept a few inch shift. Now I'm REALLY thinkin! I think I need to buy that truck! I hope the owner calls or emails back. But, the info is great whether I buy this truck or not, because I will buy another one someday - the plan anyway. Looks like the fwd limit would be when the crossmember cradle starts to hit the front axle pinion hump... But I do not believe it would need to go fwd that much. Thanks again! |

The split picture is actually from '70 GMC Jimmy brochure (Chevy is the same except the tires are off). The other two were grabs from somewhere to use as reference for a C30 conversion. It would have been '72 down for me to keep it. Have a total of five pictures in the group, the rest are of the t-case mount.

If you find a 7oor4 from a 4 wheel drive you can just use a 2" spacer and not have to change outputs.
