$ speed and Aux overdrive unit for my 1951 3800 pickup.
I have located a 4 speed trans and Aux ( od , UD, D) 3 speed from a 40- 46 chevy COE truck. Can anyone tell me if this tranny is the SM 420 muncie trans or somthing else , My 420 is damn near bullet proof. The aux unit is a watson unit - early spicer, etc. This one bolts together no short drive shaft. Can any one confirm what the trans is for this year??? The Aux is no good to me if the primary trans is weak?? I would really like to make this work cause it would give me an overdrive without butchering my truck. Any one know ???

Re: $ speed and Aux overdrive unit for my 1951 3800 pickup.
It was on ebay under 1940-1946 chevy COE. The trans I have found out is a straight cut , no syncros type. I am negotiating for the overdrive unit , if I can confirm that it will bolt to the SM 420 thats in my truck. It ( the overdrive) unit looks to be a lot smaller than the 5831 spicers or other fairly small units . I have never seen one that didnt have a short drive shaft until now. This ubit would help my 51 out without having to cut it up to get overdrive.

I am in the process as we speak . I am even going to check with the OLD GMC trucks site also . My gut says go with it , my caution side says tread lightly until i know it will fit . Gotta love that as we get older we get more cautious . Guess we got less Money???

I remember those, they are noisy. sort of like riding in a blender. they are also slow shifting
You would have to double clutch to get a smooth shift.in the right truck it would be pretty cool like a short 1ton dually with a 270 GMC split ............... |
