lower ball joint boot install? 87 GMC

have an 87 GMC 1500 2WD with ruined ball joints. the boots are all but missing. The lower ball joints are the press in kind. I have the lowers out, and the new ones ready to install, but not sure if the boot goes over the ball joint and then you put the ball joint in the hole and press it in, or press in the ball joint without the boot and set the boot on top of the pressed in ball joint. there are no snap rings, just the ball joint, boot and grease fitting.
