Need Help with a vibration in my Jimmy

I have a 1972 GMC Jimmy auto with 4wd. I bought the Jimmy 6 months ago and it had a old tires on it. I replaced the tires with 31" tires.

When the Jimmy gets to 55mph I can feel a vibration in rear. I had my father-in-law follow me today and he said the right rear had a wobble.

I lifted the Jimmy and shock the tire and had a little play up and down but couldn't feel any side to side. I also check the other side and it was tight. I can't here any noise going down the road.

Is it the rear end or bearing?

A wobble in the rear is neither. You have something bent. Either a wheel or axle. Swap wheels side to side and have father-in-law follow again. If wobble changes side, wheel. If not, axle.

You can set up a fixture using a dial indicator also on a fixed stand and put the indicator on the axle flange (truck on jackstands and wheel off) and rotate and check runout. Needs to be really level for accuracy, but if you can see the wobble it's way off.

Re: Need Help with a vibration in my Jimmy

I jacked up the jimmy this morning and pulled on the tire and the axle has play. I can pulled it out and push it in. (very little movement but some) the movement is not really a wobble the axle just has play in and out. I can't shake the tire just pull it in and out and little movement up and down not side to side. The other side has no movement or play. I'll jack it up and try it.

Re: Need Help with a vibration in my Jimmy

Thanks Mike

It was a tire/rim issue. I rotation the tires and problem moved to the front. I'm getting my Jimmy set-up. I'm going to post some pics when I finish in a couple of weeks.

The play on the rear axle in-out is normal. The 12-bolt is a C-clip axle and there is always a little bit of slop in the shaft. A lot of axles are like this.
