3 speed to SM465
Is there any difference in the clutch on these trannies? My 3 speed is running a 10" clutch, what does the SM 465 have? I was just given an SM 465 out of a 67 that a buddy was gonna throw to the dump, and was looking at swapping the 3 speed out for this one. I have a brand new 10" clutch to go into the 3 speed but wanna know if i can use it in a 4 speed

When I researched replacing my three speed with an SM465, back when I wasn't going to go to a big block, it did not look like the clutch needed to be changed. However I was told by some that the bellhousing for the 3 speed might not work with the 4 speed. I think it was a guy at Advance Adapters who said the hole for the 3 speed tranny was smaller than the hole for the 4 speed. I had many on the board disagree. Never found out as I swapped in the big block.
On a different note, are you sure it's an 465 rather than a 420. I thought the 420's were used in 67?

If I recall, the 71 blazer with the 350 and the SM465 had an 11" clutch.

The input shaft is the same size, and spline count...the clutch will work. The four speed's usually came with an 11 inch heavy duty clutch because the trans was rated heavy duty. Like YuKon said, the bellhousing may be a problem, but you should be able to find one fairly reasonably priced. The bellhousings are interchangable on the motor. Should be a bolt in swap...except for a hole in the floor for shifter. Will also need a high hump floor panel , but I think all standard transmission trucks came with it. Obvious question is..why was he going to throw it away?? Is it in good condition, or in need of repair?

It's in perfect working order, he is just sick of looking at it Oh, it comes with the bell housing I am looking at buying a 71 LWB rolling chassis fro him as well, and it has a 67 CMC cab and a 68 GMC front clip on it. No motor and tranny. Should be bale to get it for 2 or 300 bucks it's his posi I am looking at getting as well in another posting i just did, except he tossed this complete 67 rolling chassis to the dump and i'm gonna go rob the posi for free
Will I need to move the tranny crossmember if I am putting my small block in the I-6 location?

I just ordered a new disk for my factory 68 CH465 and it was a 12 inch disk. I'd beef it up if you are also upgrading to a SB. I think the bells are the same. I've got my clutch all apart right now if you need any pictures or to compare parts.
I'm not sure about the engine mounting. All I could do is help you replicate the factory 4 speed config.

Bell housing hole size.....67 & older were 4.683(same as car). 68 up are a 5.126 hole, & that doesnt matter if its a 3spd, or 4 spd(go by the yr). The 10" clutch will work, its just not as heavy as an 11 or 12 " setup. on the crossmember, if you are using the I6 stands , the bell crossmember will be in the proper location to mount the sb in I 6 position. I like to drill the eng mount holes(in the stands) to 5/8" to help with assembly, & give a little room to "cheat" the final position. Good luck,crazyL

Yes, the 4 spd is shorter than the 3 speeds.....so you will have d shaft lenght issues......crazyL
