72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
Converted to front disc brakes on my 68 chevy truck. The tab on the frame is in the REAR of the crossmember. The rubber hose rubs the caliper in turns. Is it supposed to be like this??
Its a DD so I dont really want to re route all the brake stuff to the front crossmember.. Yes I searched, QUICK please

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
If I recall (been over a decade), I ended up using hoses made for the later
('71) brake assy and re-routing them to the front. Do whatever you have to do make it safe...especially on a DD. Last edited by ETsC10; 01-22-2012 at 02:03 PM. |

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
Got any pics?
ECE makes a shorter disc brake "conversion hose for the 67-70 trucks. I think you should be able to make the 71-72 hoses work.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
I would call one of the companies that specializes in disc brake conversion, like ECE and ask what the length of their hoses are. I'd assume since they sell bolt on kits for the 67-70's that they sell a longer brake hose to account for this than the stock one the parts stores would carry. I used the whole cross member and all from a 71 when I did mine and I do recall the clip mount being in a different location.
Your other option would be to grind off the welds on the tab and move it to the correct spot and re weld it.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
The hose you have is just fine.
It's not an oem disc brake hose. It's either a 3AN or 4AN aftermarket steel braided hose. (I thought you were talking about stock rubber hoses) The fitting you have at the caliper is causing your "kinking issues". You could have used a banjo bolt fitting to allow the hose to route like the oem hoses do.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
I used the stock 71 hoses on my 68 with no problem. Tab is still located on rear of cross member. I think Keith has the solution to your problem.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
I would have just used oem 71-72 hoses.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
I was thinking your hoses were just too short. I haven't ever even seen a set up like that, with that kind of fitting on the caliper. Mine are like the ones above with the banjo fitting and crush washer.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
Once the hoses get kinked, will they 'unkink'
Im pretty sure my brake locking is in the hoses, its better now than it was before I unkinked and re routed them but I still think it could be better? So would I be better off with 71 rubber hoses or what? Thanks

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
I have used impala brake hoses from your local parts store on more than 1 conversion. If your banjo bolt is 7/16 , use 77 impala , if it is 10mm , use 80-86 impala. Please check on your truck , but it has worked for me. -Bob

Quote:
The bend in the steel part of the hose (on the end that connects to the caliper) might be different for each side.

Re: 72 brake hoses on 68 chevy
Hmm..
Good info.. I 'unkinked' the braided lines from ECE and it helped some but there is still some drag. Will NEW hoses fix it or what? They were kinked pretty good lol DUH
