Re: long water pump or short

If you have stock accessory brackets and pulleys from an original era motor you removed that you plan on reinstalling, then I assume you would want the shorter water pump.

Re: long water pump or short

Your wiring harness is set up for a driver's side alternator so it makes sense to use original type brackets. If you have or add period PS, you will want your pulleys to line up. If you change to a long water pump you would end up having pulley issues on a stock PS set up. There is not a huge difference in length - short is 5 5/8" deep and long is 7". It will make a difference in how the fan is in relation to the shroud as a long one will put it deeper into the shroud instead of about 1/2 in and 1/2 out as production was.

Re: long water pump or short

You can shim everything out to match, but I would recommend against it. Its what I had to do on the 71 and the belts make a horrible racket. When I did the Blazer I used a short water pump and everything lined up like it was supposed to.
