Dual-wheel conversion of longhorn?

I stumbled across this thread of an "inboard duallie", for lack of a more official name, and was very intrigued. Other than wheel tubs, it looks like a fairly reversible change, too.

Since I'm not very familar with HD trucks, I'm wondering if this is possible on a standard C20 longhorn (which I guess has C30 rails). Is there actually room to have completely inboard duallies like this on a truck that didn't start life that way?

I always assumed that factory dualies had to run the extra wheels outboard due to fitment, but maybe not. Not saying I'm going to run off an do this, but it's certainly cool and different!

Re: Dual-wheel conversion of longhorn?

C&C trucks (cab & chassis trucks, aka flatbeds) came w/the narrower rear housings. When swapped under a standard fleetside bed, the wheel sit as they do in that pic. If a standard 'dually' rear housing is used, the wheels would stick out farther & require the dually fenders.

Thanks!

So is there anything about a conventional (non-C&C) frame that would prevent you from installing the narrower C&C rear end? I imagine you'd need the springs and everything else from the C&C truck, right?

Nothing about the frame width prevents swapping parts.

Re: Dual-wheel conversion of longhorn?

Dual rear wheel cab & chassis (which is all C/30 DRWs) had the narrower axle and single rear wheel cab & chassis had the same rear as a Longhorn or any other pickup. The Longhorn frame, being the one ton frame,is the same frame as used on all C/30s dual & single rear wheel. The Longhorn is the same truck as a 133" dual rear wheel cab & chassis except it has the single wheels and a bed. All 72Freak had to do was put a Longhorn bed on a 133" cab & chassis. The only modification required was extending the wheelhouses inward because the dual wheel axle doesn't allow for the 48"(+/-) floor width that is standard on all pickups.

Re: Dual-wheel conversion of longhorn?

Just look for a narrow rear axle and mount it up. You will have to make the wheel wells..I added 4" to each one and cut the floor to match. You will no longer be able to haul any 4' wide material laying flat though. I also used wheel spacers on the front to push the wheels out as it didnt look good to me with the dually wheels way in. We tried some regular wheels also but that didnt look good either. I also added some wheel well flare at the rear and it looked fine. I have enough left over to do another rear of you need it.

Re: Dual-wheel conversion of longhorn?

this is very interesting, I missed out on the chance to have a 67 C20 flatbed with duals from pretty much nothing but with this knowlege I can slowly gather up the truck and parts to "clone" wat I lost
