So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

Everything from the door back is almost completely constructed of Bondo, should I locate some new bed panels? Or just slap on a new pile of Bondo? Lol
I've been using a fine-bristled wire wheel that seems to cut right through the Bondo without damaging metal.

Looks like you may have a little more than a "skim coat"

Is the filler lifting in places?? or are you just cutting it down to metal?

Wire wheel to cut down to metal, but the filler is lifting and cracking in spots

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

I found a similar bondo job on my truck. Im pulling it all off and starting fresh (actually fixing the problems), though this is tons of work.

I had around a quarter inch of bondo in most places on average.

If the radiator cap is good, simply lift it up and drive a new truck under it. Works every time lol

I would think if it has excess bondo ... then a good used fender might be the way to go...

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

blasting will not pull the mud effectively, would cost a fortune. if the panels are damaged underneath, get new ones. I have seen a number of cars with way more mud than needed, but usually it is to hide problems

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

Ouch. My 54 was like that. amazingly it only needed a number of fairly minor patches after pulling all the bondo off. I almost filled a 2 gallon bucket with the scrapings.
If you are up to the metal work, fix it and reward yourself with a truck that weighs 200 lbs less.

Bondo should be a controlled substance, you should have to provide proof that you are able to use the product as intended

The thicker the bondo the better...It adds a bunch of weight at the scrap metal scales.

Use the "Tom Sawyer" method, tell all the kids in the neighborhood that it's fun to remove Bondo...

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

Like Mike says,if it's bondo'd to fix damage, then replace the panels. If it's just excessive "blocking" get it off and move forward with what you have. Get plenty of dust masks and wheel/disc it off.

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

considering your location and the rep is that rustfree stuff is more available than in almost any place in the country
i'd use asis while looking for replacement panels and cab etc

Re: So uh, what do you do when your truck is made of bondo??

The best way I've found to remove gross amounts of body filler is with a heat gun. It's very fast, and much cleaner than grinding.
