89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Hello everyone. I have been trolling the board for a while now, and have seen some pretty cool trucks. After selling off my 2001 duramax truck, and my 84 cucv I had a need for another truck. Enter a 1989 chevy c2500 3+3. I have always wanted a 4wd crew cab but was unable to find one in my budget. So I decided to buy the 2wd and convert it to 4wd and a short wheelbase. I removed the rear bed.....and rear frame . The axles were some that I had picked up from a friend. Front is a 78 ford hp60 stuffed with 4.56 gears, 35spline dana 70 stubs, dodge knuckles, chevy outers, warn premiums, and the bottom has been shaved. The rear is a van 14 bolt with 4.56's, a detroit, and custom disc brakes in the form of dana 60 calipers and brackets.

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Rear suspension is comprised of 63" leafs with a shackle flip. Front is a custom 52" conversion (I will be replacing the crappy front springs with new ones). I recently aquired a 93 5.9 cummins with 90k on it to fill the engine bay . The plan is to build a 47rh transmission and put a late model transfer case behind it.

I think its about 5" right now. It will probably end up with 4" once the diesel goes in, and the truck is fully dressed.

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Ok...not any physical progress to report, but I think I have most of my info on the transmission. I still need to decide which converter I am going to run though. I am going to try to get the old engine out this weekend if I have time after working on the pull truck. Does anybody know what would be a good durable frame coating that will hold up to the corrosive environment here in maine? I have heard good and bad about por15. I would like it to hold up well, but not cost a fortune....if at all possible. More pics too come soon.

check out RUST BULLET , im starting to use this now on my crew, sprayed under side of bed while off for paint, also had a guy sand blast my battery trays and some misc other stuff and i sprayed those today. it does not require top coat for uv protection but im going to finish coat in a satin black as the rust bullet is silver color.....from what i researched the rust bullet requires less prep and holds up better than por15.......ordered mine from summit...

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

The 14 bolt brakes are pretty simple..They use factory dana 60 front calipers and brackets. My friend made up a couple of weld on rings for the housing that accept the caliper brackets. The rotors are also dana 60 front.

The duramax isn't in my truck..its just a customers vehicle. I wish it was in mine though.....way out of my price range right now.

Nice project! On the torque converter, I'd go with a DPC. I can get you a price on one if you like. Also, nice job on the spring hangers. Very nice.

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Looks good, im building a similar truck but after 8 months of looking for a good short bed i gave up and went long bed. I thought i would share some info with you on amount of sag with the cummins, Im running heavy lift springs in the front and i lost almost 2 inches in the front with the cummins over the 454. i built custom hangers and shackles to correct it. look for my build thread to be up in the next few days. im about half way into it.

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Not much progress lately, but that will change this week. I just finished up 3 duramax jobs, and i will have a little breather. I actually got rid of the front hubs that were on the truck a little while back, and I am in the shop right now putting my new ones together. Hopefully I can get them on the truck tomorrow so it is rolling again. Next I am going to pull the front clip off, and yank the motor/tranny so I can mock up the engine. Pics coming soon.....Thanks for all the comments.

Re: 89 resto-mod crew cab short bed

Its back in the shop Nose is pulled, wiring disconnected, and the engine/ tranny will be out today. I'm hoping to get the engine crossmember done tomorrow. After that I need to pull the cab so I can finish up the frame, and send it out for blasting.
