Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
I ran flappers on mine. They work well on the back because of less weight and tire bulge. I ended up buying a set of w/w tires from coker for the front and kept the porta walls for the rear.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
I have the same situation. I want whitewalls but the tires that are on my truck are too good to get rid of and then pay $1K for new tires. I'm probably going with porta walls for now. I'd like to find one of those places that grind the sidewalls but don't think there's any in the Atlanta area, and I don't want to try grinding them by hand.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Why don't you guys go to a junk yard for a couple junky tires and PRACTICE! It can't be THAT hard, the guys doing it don't have phD's so what do you have to lose? I can't imagine that doing it two or three times won't be enough to get a feel for it.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Sure, I can grind the side off of my tires but I don't think I could get it perfectly concentric doing it like the video. I think you would have to rotate the tire while holding the grinder in a fixed position to make it look right, and I don't have any way to do that.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Just an idea,
check out a 4x4 custom shop and see if they can shave the letters off. 4wheelers get custom "chunked'" tires cut all the time. shavieing letters is childs play vs custom cutting tread in a $600 (40"+ tall) rock crawling wheel |

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
There are several vids, look at them, the car in reverse and the grinder would be the way to go, a jack stand to support the grinder would help. It just a big lathe, and the grinder is the knife. Practice on a used tire.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Hey Sarge, thanks for the link - excellent info. $16 each is cheap!
Just curious, do they make the whitwall as wide/narrow as you want? Or do they make it whatever width the tire has white under the blck, regardless? |

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Dan, they only make it as wide as the tire will allow. After he did my tires. He told me I should have bought another brand as they have close to a 2 7/8-3" white wall that can be buffed out. I can't remember what tire it was sorry.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
I have two set of Goodyear wide whites on my cars. I bought both of them from Wallace Wade's in Dallas. I went and talked to him and he said that the tire manufactures are continually raising his cost. But looks at any tires you buy these days and they'll set you back $750-$1,000. But the way I looked at it is that if I bought a quality tire to put on my old cars that I don't drive too much then hopefully they will last many years! Now if you blow one that sucks! But i talked to the guy at the chain tire store (Discount Tire) and he said that he can get the same wide white walls tires that Wallace Wade or Coker or anybody can and he will match the price. So if you decide to buy wide whites then I'd recommmend at least checking with your local chain store who promises to match prices.
Also my opinion is that there isn't much you can do to your truck that will effect the overall look of your truck more than wheels/tires and stance! Can an old rusty beat up farm truck and put some nice steel wheels, wide white walls, and lower it down and it will look 1000x better! Just my opinion!

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&fe...&v=JnwevOfIUqA I like the way this guy does it. He runs the car at idle while he's grinding. I would think it would give you a more uniform "grind" similar to a lathe. It takes him a few minutes but he gets it down near the end.
It may be a little "shady" but hey... I live dangerously.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
I did mine on my 53. Wasn't to hard. I wouldn't do it again because of the smell and clean up.
Jeffg1010, I just finished watching that video. Very cool way to do it. Now you guy's need to find some Alray Duster tires and get to cutting! I'm going to call the place that did mine and find out what tire had the huge white wall. I'm happy with the job they did on mine. I've had them do it in the past and have always been happy.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
They're just danged expensive. I do see guys all the time talking about picking them up cheap at swap meets but I've never seen good AND cheap WWW's myself.
I will say they're much cheaper if you don't have to ship them 3 times...bought them, didn't like the size, shipped them back, shipped another set. That's about $200 extra in shipping : (

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
When I lived in Texas and worked at the Pontiac dealership in Waco there was a guy who came by every couple of weeks and either put white wall on cars that had black walls or reworked the sidewalls of cars with mismatched tires so that they matched. He did it on the car and it took him about fifteen minutes to a half hour a tire. He had a tool that trimmed a groove in the sidewall and a setup that laid latex rubber in that groove.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
For you guys who are on the fence about the white wall tires... If you love them and want them, find someway to get them or you'll not be happy for as long as you own the truck... It's like the right paint job, tires and rims can make or break a nice car or truck.. it's one of the first things you see when you look at.. just my two cents..

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$
Here's before & after pics, WWs are H78s & L78s Cokers that replaced 225 & 245 60 BFG, Ride quality I think is better with the WWs probably due to the taller profile, not to mention they look heaps better!
