I have a 70 c10 shortbed. I want to change it to a 5 lug rear end. Will the axles from a 72 or newer fit the 70 rear end?

Maybe.
There were two different rearend widths the the 1970 model year.
I always measure them between the backing plates.
If it's 57" the 71-72 axles will work.
If it's 55-1/2" they will not.
