Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

That's one slick truck. Too bad it's a shortbed...
One little nit-picky thing that bothers me is when they don't stick to the black headlight bezels on the 69-70's. IMO it looks a lot better with them black.
But that's just me.
Nice truck, though. Interested to see what it goes for.

Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

AH, I didn't catch that (throw me a bone, I'm a 66 guy at heart and my pet peeve is when the white grille surround and black background is painted over body color )

The ONLY thing I didn't like about the gold 70 (except for the bezels now that you pointed em out...) is the re-popped SPID. I understand why folks do it - to make the truck look ABSOLUTELY brand new/redone (and this one has the original docs I believe to prove what's on the new SPID) but to me it's just best to mask that sucker off and paint around it. Just me. But I'd still sell my dogs bowl to get that thing if I could....

Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

I was gonna mention the SPID, too, but I didn't want to come across as too much of an a-hole...
The previous owner of my truck did a nice job of preserving the old beatup SPID in mine.

Love this truck also.
(same on the headlight bezels)

Can anyone tel me if the Custom/10 trucks should have had black lower mouldings?
This one has woodgrain lower mouldings.
I thought that was for the CST trucks in '70?

I think black (not woodgrain) lower trim was reserved for the Highlander only.

Lets back up a minute.
We're talking specifically about the 69-70 trucks.
The top of the line trucks were CST's in 1969-70.
The Cheyenne's and Cheyenne Super's didn't appear until the 71-72 model years.
(Highlanders were '72 only?)
There were many trucks produced with the black lower trim.
I was just trying to get a grip on which ones.

I think this '70 ebay truck should have the black lower mouldings, since it's a Custom/10, not a CST.

Not sure these guys were going for a concourse restoration. Or they would have used black headlight bezels. The woodgrain is for the CSTs only I believe. I may be wrong but I don't think this two tone paint pattern was available until 71? Gringo pointed that out to me the other day. However, I am doing the same on my CST with red/white. I like it better than white only on the bottom of the trim or just the roof. Maybe an expert can clear this up?

Mike your picture of the gold truck has CST badges on it and should have had woodgrain lower mouldings and the woodgrain band on the gate. Now you tell me about the paint pattern I had an elderly gentleman (about my age) ask me today if that was the original paint on my truck and my reply " Sir that truck is all original right down to the air in the tires.

I know your not talking 72's but my 72 Highlander has woodgrain and is a Custom/10.

Oh nooooo! that throws all our theories out the window!

Beautiful truck. Quick question - do you have a Custom Deluxe or just Custom - I thought highlander could only be ordered as a Custom Deluxe add-on?? But then again, I'm here to learn.

Love that truck by the way. Wow. (yours - the green one I mean, although I love the 70 gold white one I originally posted too, even with all the nit-picking. I DO agree falsely advertising something is a bad thing though - and there's a bit of skullduggery afoot here I believe....)

Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

I believe if I wanted to preserve the SPID,... I would paint a second glovebox door and install the reproduction SPID on it.
That way the original glovebox door and SPID can be used as documentation.

Daaaang, that's SMART right there! Excellent idea.

As for the woodgrain, good question - I'd say it's probably correct, but don't quote me on that either. Both cheyennes and cheyenne supers came with it in 72 (this is a previous thread I can't find (of course...) about lower belt moldings - while I know supers came with the woodgrain, so did my 72 cheyenne I had when I was a laaaat younger - and so was it. But I have to admit, I would still like to get to the bottom of the whole "what got black lower belt molding question....?) I actually kinda like it a little better.

EDIT: litew8 - thanks! your post hadn't been in there when I was writing the above - that may be the case (highlander)! I agree, that seat material is rare, and NICE!

Ha! Well, I guess I did, didn't I! Thanks for finding it. Oddly, the questions remain unanswered too - all part of the fun. I STILL don't know what the black trim ACTUALLY came on...

Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

huh, it has the same interior as mine.
That seat fabric isn't a very common one found!
Wondering if it's new (says all new interior), and if yes - where they got it.
I've checked SMS samples and the color of their fabric isn't a match.

I'm going to "ask a question" and see if they reply.

Mine:

That's the same fabric as in my truck but mines black. I sure wish I could find an new cover like it.

Re: what a gorgeous 70 on ebay - WOW

Thanks! Actually, I had just tonight read on another website that the black trim was designated for the Highlander only.
I'll see if I can find the site again. Edit: I was off a little - it doesn't say reserved, so it may apply to others?
It says "designated", but not in the same context.

"During 1972, a unique Chevrolet promotional pickup was introduced for a limited time in 1/2 , 3/4, and 1 ton models. This truck was designated the ‘Highlander’. Unfortunately, it did not have side emblems or related name plates that would cause people to remember this special model. On the actual truck the word Highlander was only listed on the glove box door inside ID sheet.

This vehicle was actually a modified middle series ‘Custom Deluxe’. The horizontal lower side trim has black inserts, not wood grain.
"

Forgotten 1972 Suburban Highlander

More space between fender badges on one side vs the other. Thats all I could ever stare at if it was mine. Would bug the hell out of me. LOL

Maybe a small thing, but on a truck THIS nice, good grief, break out a ruler...

If only I could build a truck this "screwed up"... () I STILL love it!

Thats a really nice truck and the work the guy has put into it (original or not) appears to be of pretty good quality.
One thing I use to judge how detailed or fussy he might have been in restoring and maintaining his truck.....is his house and yard, and his is pretty nice. Clearly this guy cleans up after himself.
When I see a truck that has been 'beautifully restored' and 'lovingly maintained' and everything else in the guys yard looks like a dump or wrecking yard, I generally doubt that his vehicle has escaped the wrath of neglect or shortcuts.
I think the price is a bit high and I agree with the $15K range...more or less on this one.
My two bits.

I have owned several all original 69-70 custom/10 trucks and ALL of them had black lower trim. Im not saying that you couldnt get woodgrain as an option, but All of mine had black from the factory.
