What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Well, as I keep digging further into my '65 panel project, I keep finding more and more things wrong/missing mechanically.

Working on brake lines yesterday, I noticed that the bell housing engine mounts (manual trans) that mount to the cross member are missing. The rubber mounts are there, well at least the part between the bell housing and cross member. I don't know if I am missing any other parts as well.

Anyone know what size bolts these are and is there supposed to be another cushion on the bottom of the cross member? Pics would be helpful too.

Thanks.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

The should be 3/8 x 16" for the 6 bellhousing bolts, around 1.5 or 1.75" long.

The cushion you are talking about, is that the tranny mount?

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Yeah, not the bell housing to engine bolts.

It's the bell housing to cross member that manual trans setups use. The transmission does not have a cross member in the back like an auto does. Basically the trans free floats out in space.

On original manual trans trucks, you had the normal front mounts and the bell housing has a set of mount that attach to the "mid" cross member which is located right about the same plane at the firewall.

u will more than likely find 2 bolts that have an insulator and a bushing on it to fit inside the other insulator

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Im still working on the bolt size, but the bellhousing mounts have an upper and lower rubber mount, so 2 for each side. Can get at NAPA or just about any parts store. Ill look in my book tonight and see if i can find bolt size.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Great, thanks. I am guessing I am missing the lower part. The rubber mount is between the bell housing and the cross member but there is nothing in the underside of the cross member.

Man PO's can be just stupid sometimes!!! No idea how long this has been missing but with all the problems I have been finding, I am sure glad I towed it home and not try to drive it.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

I agree. They eventually did away with the bell housing mounts and went to the rear cross member, so Im going to guess that those mounts are just as important. I made sure to check the status of mine when I got the last 63 in 2010.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Yes there is another rectangular rubber cushion that fits up inside the channel of the crossmember. It's actually supposed to have a separate metal plate with tangs to bend up against the bolt head to keep it from backing out. There is also a round tube that extends up into the upper cushion and against the bellhousing ear. The bolt size is 7/16-14, but I don't remember the length. I'm thinking around 4". The original bolts have a tapered end like the '73 and up motor mount bolts.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

I have the engine out of my truck but the bell housing is in place. I have one pic but its not that great.

Here it is but I will try to take more... might be a few days before I can get to it though.

These are the mount bushings that go there:

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Thanks guys!

Captainfab - I was afraid I was missing more parts than I thought.

blackedoutharley - thanks for the pic. I can tell ya, someone hacked up the bell housing to fit a normal starter in. That whole bottom corner has been cut away.

I swear, the more I find, the more pissed off I get. If I had access to a two post lift, I would just pull the full body and go over the whole thing. Seriously some people should NEVER be allowed to work on vehicles!!!

I'll get it all fixed but my mid March timeline (hoping to take to the CPP cruise) is shot.

If you decide you need another bellhousing, let me know. I believe I should have some of the missing mounts also.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

I plan to replace the bellhousing to block bolts when I do my engine swap. I have the big block ready, bellhousing is at my dads getting machined for the novak hydraulic clutch conversion mount and I need to get bellhousing bolts. I don't have the bolts for my donar, and short of pulling an existing bolt from the truck...i believe they are 3/8-16 1 1/4" length & I will use grade 8. Just want to confirm the length of the bolt. Will be using the frame mounted bellhousing if this helps. Im told 1 1/2"bolts will be too long. Bellhousing #3815891.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

No. I have heard mixed views on this. Half of the people who did conversions did and half didn't. I will wait and see how it fits on initial mock up once front end is off and the 230 is out. My valve covers are not stock, about 1/2" higher than stock. I know the frame rails will have to be trimed about 1/2" for header clearance. I have tubular motor mounts as well and going to hydraulic clutch.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

Looking for the bolts that go through the bellhousing and connect to the engine. I have the two bolts for the bellhousing mounts. I know they are 3/8-16, just not sure if 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" in length.

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

the lower (thicker) boss on the driver side is getting machined down to the same height as the others due to the mounting plate that i have for the hydraulic slave cylinder

Re: What size bolts for bell housing engine mounts?

I just used an off the shelf grade 5 or 8 1/2x4 i believe (could not find 3 1/2") but it was be about 1/2" longer then ORG. so i put another nut on top of the bell-housing "ear" to lock it so they wont "fall-out "again
