cold air intake

been doing some research on these systems. seems kind of pricey, even though once you buy one im sure it will pay off eventually. i considered building my own cheaply. the only thing im wondering is what size universal filter would be good for my truck. i have a 2004 chevy 1500 4.3, i was going to get a cone filter by Airaid - # 6'' Base, 4-5/8'' Top, 9'' Height, 3'' Flange. seems big enough for the amount of air needed to pass through. probably will build a bounding box to exclude it from the heat off the motor. for piping it would be basic 3" exhaust pipe connected with pvc flexible coupling and adapted to the throttle body. came out to roughly $100. any input? size filter suggestion? what you would do different?

Re: cold air intake

I started piecing one together for my swap truck....still was going to be a little over $100. Returned all of the pieces and got one off of ebay for $58.

Heres one for $70

Re: cold air intake

I know the 5.3 takes a 4" intake tract
I'm setting up a ram air for my truck
I am using 4" steel tubing from lowe's for a total of $18
And a spectre reusable 4" inlet 6" length 6" base diameter filter for $15
You can use your stock box with a k&n drop in and cut some holes in it to let in more air and replace the plastic tubing with metal tubing, and...and...and maybe save some $$$

Re: cold air intake

Try to stay away from metal tubing because it will run much hotter than the black plastic that is used. The air flowing through the intake is what cools the tubing. The heat in the engine compartment will heat the metal much more than the plastic and the air isnt enough to cool the metal tubing. You may flow more but your intake air temps will be much higher.

good point about the metal tubing. i was going to use it since i already had prebent tubes from a previous exhaust job. also when i do this minor up grade its not for show, and the truck never will be.

Re: cold air intake

He is very right
I have a big opening forcing fresh air into my engine compartment but now I'm thinking header wraps and insulation for my intake will be very beneficial
Or PVC

Re: cold air intake

I have heard the argument that the air doesnt stay in the tube long enough to really pull heat from the metal tubing... with that being said, I purchased a S&B CAI for my truck. I liked the molded tube, large/enclosed air box and oil less filter. I do understand they are $200+ but I wanted a pre-fit kit with a CARB number. Just my .02

Re: cold air intake

I did a air raid jr kit. From race-mart.com it cost 145 bucks with a new drop in filter. I'm not a fan of home rigging look under the hood...
