Tailgate trim installation

I have installed the chrome center piece above the tailgate latch, my two upper molding pieces are either too long and need to be cut off, or they need to go over the outer edges of the chrome above the latch. If it is to be cut what is the best way too cut the trim without damaging it? Also what size drill bit is used for installing the clips?

Re: Tailgate trim installation

The two side trims should lap over the handle trim...maybe ~1/4" each side.
On hole size, mine are 1/4" and the holes for the tail light trim is larger (forgot to measure).

Re: Tailgate trim installation

i have done this install to my tailgate as well.... i dont remember the drill bit size.... however i do know how to shorten trim... what i do: if i have to trim more then 2 inches, i cut it with tin snips about 1/2 inch away from my line then i take a grinder and rind it all the way to my line or you could say my "desired length".... thats worked for me.

Re: Tailgate trim installation

Like ETsC10 says they overlap. You push the end of the trim over the center piece. WES

Re: Tailgate trim installation

Thanks for the replies, I guess in the morning I'll install, my main concern being if the trim overlaps the latch trim it will not set flush to the metal where the two seperate pieces meet.

Re: Tailgate trim installation

The center piece is tapered for that very reason you just install the clips in the tail gate and slide them on from each side until the mounting bolts line up with the holes then bolt em up. I didn't have to cut mine. Be careful when you push the trim on the center piece so you don't bend it. cheers, Pat
