just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

Just bought this truck.
Has 139k miles on the truck.
Runs good but after it sits for 3 or 4 hours or overnight when you start it, it will start and die immediately and then you have to crank it and bleed a knob on the rectangular box on the firewall then do again a few times and it will start and run fine after the 3rd time. Leak in a fuel line?
Anyone ever dealt with this issue?
Nice truck and planning to use it on the farm but dont want to have to bleed it every time it sits for a night etc.

Thanks for the compliment! Just bought it to take and keep on the farm so I dont get stuck heading to the hunting spots. Probably live in the garage and come out 10-12 times a year.

What rectangular box are talking about? The fuel filter? We need more info or pics on what you're talking about. What did the previous owner say about it?

Truck looks beautiful.

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

I think it is the filter. Mounted next to the a/c evap coil ox and has snap spring's like the way a master cylinder lid is held on. Has a clear or white cap on the top left that bleeds it.
Previous owner showed me how to make it start by bleeding it after cranking the engine and said he thought it was a leaking fuel line.
I have never owned one of these so do not know where to start.
Sorry no other pictures immediate but can take more if you think it would help.
Thanks Tim

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

Well you're getting air in the system somewhere near the engine bay and the fuel is draining back to the tank. I would start looking around where you bleed it. It could even be the thing you bleed it with thats letting air back in.

Nice truck by the way!

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

You haven't noticed any puddles of fuel or anything have you? If there are no leaks then I would look for places air could get in. Either way it's losing its prime and there's a bad hose, line or connection somewhere. If it's not around that bleeder you are talking about, just check out the rest of the fuel system from the tank to the engine.

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

No I havent but it is on gravel so might not be evident.
I just bought it so havent had any time to study the situation yet.
Could it be from that filter box (dont know the technical term) with the bleeder to the engine, or would it be from the box with bleeder back to the tank or all of the above?
Appreciate your input!

It could be any of the above. Most of the time on diesels, they will lose their prime between the filter and the tank, not from the filter to the engine.

Also check out The Diesel Place. LOTS of very good info there on the 6.2. I know I love mine. I think I have read to get rid of the 'box' type filter and go with the older screw-on filter.

That isnt a bad idea at all. That box filter thingey which never having owned one of these is alien to me anyway, looks like a problem waiting to happen.

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

If it has dual tanks check the tank switch under the truck on the passenger side. When I first converted my truck to a 6.2 my switch was letting air in and I couldn't keep it running. Once I got the switch swapped out with another one I had laying around it starts right up.

Box filter works fine, nee to check the o rings on the screws. There's a thread on it over at DP.

Remember, keep an eye on temp and oil, check those oil cooler lines (LH rear of block).

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

Your leak is most likely out the back of the fuel filter base from the differential pressure sensor. They leaked enough that GM/Stanadyne stopped putting the sensor in that filter in about 1988 or so. Get a different housing that doesn't have the sensor.

I'm on my 4th 6.2 diesel truck and 3 of them have leaked there. The one that doesn't is an 82 and has the old round filters...

The square filter works great otherwise and is very quick and easy to change. I wouldn't get rid of it...

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

Nice truck! That's exactly what I've been looking for. I even posted my diesel '85 Jimmy for trade for a truck like that. Great find.I just can't find one around here.

Definitely air getting in there. Look for seepage. It could be anywhere...in front of or behind the filter/water separator. Does it start right up after bleeding or still crank a while? Definitely look for seepage from tank to injectors, but when an injector pump goes it will get hard to start. But,it's all the time.

Re: just bought 85 K-20 6.2L diesel

A problem I had was where the injector return line T's in to the hard line (right behind the alternator). The little hose coming off the injector went bad and made my burb difficult to start. The hose was an old cloth covered rubber POS. It would fire up then immediately die. Once I replaced that hose and double checked all the other connections...found a loose hose clamp too...the beast would fire right up.
