What brings them back to that factory color? Model paint?

I used spray paint. sprayed it into the cap then used a real small modelers paint brush to paint them.

Better be careful! Those needles get really brittle with age. I tried painting mine and broke both the needles off. Ended up gluing the Fuel back on but the speedo needle broke into smaller and smaller pieces every time I touched it. I whittled down a toothpick to the proper size to glue in place for the speedo. Ended up actually looking good after I got them painted. Nobody notices they have been fooled with until I point it out.

i used a very small artist brush and still cut it down to just a couple of strands

Newer GM needles are too long. There might be a specific model that has ones that aren't, but all the ones I've looked at were too long.
