Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
Hey guys , I'm here in Pennsylvania but just got a line on a old Customs Boarder patrol truck that was modifided for desert life .
I was considering putting it back to a original paint color they use and run antique plates if possible , I know they issue plates to police and fire trucks , can't see why they would not a boarder patrol truck . Any thoughts on this . Thanks Greg |

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
Check with local DMV on rules and regulations. Antique plates "can" be very restrictive.
(In Maine, I basically couldn't use my truck as a truck.) Sounds like a neat project....

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
In wisconsin, there are collector plates for "stock" trucks, hobbiest plates for modified trucks, and antique plates for very old stock trucks. All of these plates limit any type of towing or hauling to 500 lbs or less.

In Ohio it only has to be 25 years old for historical tags. I have them on my truck.

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
In Virginia....25 years or older for Antique plates, but there are a lot of restrictions.
From Virginia's DMV......... Is your antique vehicle just for show…? If you plan to use your antique vehicle or trailer solely as a collector's item, you may register your vehicle with antique license plates or permanent vintage license plates. Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to: Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events. Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence. Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes. You may not use your vehicle for general, daily transportation. This includes, but is not limited to, driving to and from work. If you are providing vintage license plates, then the year embossed on the license plate must match the model year of the vehicle. In addition, DMV must inspect and approve the physical condition of the vintage plates. To register your vehicle with antique or permanent vintage license plates, DMV charges a one-time fee. Use the Vehicle Registration Application (VSA 14) or the License Plate Application (VSA 10), and the Antique Vehicle Applicant Certification (VSA 10B). Your license plates will be valid for as long as you own the vehicle. You may not transfer your license plates to another vehicle, but you may surrender them to DMV and then register them to a different vehicle for an additional fee. Unless the vehicle was manufactured for one license plate only, you must display license plates on the front and the rear of your vehicle. Using the Antique Vehicle Applicant Certification (VSA 10B), you must also certify that you own, or have regular use of, another vehicle, without antique plates, for daily use and that the vehicle or trailer you want to register with antique plates can be driven safely on the highways of Virginia. If you have additional questions, you may find the answers in our Antique Vehicle FAQs. …or do you plan to use it for everyday driving? In order to enjoy unrestricted driving privileges in your antique vehicle, you'll need to either purchase standard license plates (not antique plates) from DMV or provide vintage license plates and register your antique vehicle for general transportation purposes. No matter which option you choose, you will be subject to the same registration requirements. So, remember, if you choose to use vintage license plates, just like owning a modern vehicle, you'll have to: Renew your vehicle registration every year or every other year (depending on whether you renew for one or two years), pay the same registration fee you would pay to purchase standard license plates. Display month and year decals on your vintage license plates. Obtain an annual safety inspection sticker for your vehicle. If you own another vehicle or trailer of the same model year, you may transfer your general transportation vintage license plates to that vehicle. Violations of the antique vehicle rules are Class 4 misdemeanors under Virginia Code Section 46.2-730 and will result in the revocation of your antique or permanent vintage license plates for a period of five years from the date DMV is notified of your conviction.

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
you need to check your DMV.. here in NJ you cannot have any kind of aftermarket items on your truck like a cowl hood or outside tach etc..it must be factory or you must register and inspect every year

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
well Greg when it comes to penndot.....your screwed, your truck has to be 25 years old and it has to look the way it did when it came off the line. they changed a couple of laws for ant, classic plates here in pa. it has to look original now if i was you i would call penndot and you will talk to some lady who will have prob no clue what you are talking about, but you will need 4 pics one of each side of the truck and since it is a special truck it might have to have matching color. the rims, bumpers, doors, hood, bed, nothing can be differant from the way it was comming off the line. now i think a cop car shows its a cop car on the title as would a fire truck and so on, if thats the case and your title doesnt say border patrol then it would have to look like a regular truck. no cowl hood no tint no aftermarket no nothing, cause there going to look at the pics compare with other pics and say yes or no....and if she ask's it the original motor and tranny and exuhast say yes it is cause that wont pass either and once you get the ant, tag you can only drive in once a week well my uncle has ant, tags and he drives his a couple times a week so it depends on how many cops you drive by and how big they are on the law....sorry this got kinda long but I just had it out with that ladie the other day, the man that was in charge retired a few years ago and he was a car truck guy and nice to talk to now his secratary is the boss and she has no clue

Re: Antique Tags on a Modified Truck
Have not grabbed the truck yet , its a 1978 , I don't think they started to use the VIN to Identify back then , the title is branded with not forsale outside US since it was a former government truck .
I had a buddy who went thru this with a truck from NJ , it was a former forestry truck and had the jersey pines look ... looked like a bad ass rescue truck and the state turned him down but he went back and found pics to prove its historic value and they excepted it . Thanks for the heads up guys ! |
