My Rustoleum Adventure

Well i decided to go the rustoleum route on my truck after reading quite a few threads on here. Thanks everybody for your info. Anyways, I used the purple harbor freight gun and a friends air compressor to shoot rustoleum satin #7777. I feel like it turned out pretty good for never painting any cars before.

You have to thin the paint to skim milk consistency with mineral spirits...the key is several thin coats...wet sand every two coats...don't want to hijack this thread...do a search on Rustoleum and you should find my old thread.

Re: My Rustoleum Adventure

Thanks everybody. i used acetone for the thinning material at about 20%. It was about 75 when i sprayed the bed and around 60 degrees when i did the cab. not much changed with the temp, bout an hour on drying time was it. Wetsanded everything with 400 grit paper before i sprayed. My dad went to school for bodywork back in the 80's so the few tips sure paid off in the end.

I only wet sanded before spraying, and i put down two pretty solid coats. The second coat was applied once the first began to tack, which didn't take very long. I also went over the entire surface with paint thinner after wet sanding to get it good and clean. Hit it with a tack cloth right before spraying. Covering the entire floor with water wherever you are spraying helps cut down on quite a bit of dust as well.

Re: My Rustoleum Adventure

lots of people say the rustoleum paint just doesnt cut it.but some times its not a bad choice touch up,color match, availability, and cost compared to the better paints makes it a no brainer for some.my kid practically didnt even know what a spray gun was till I put it in his hand and said "do it like this". he did our truck and it turned out great.maybe one day it will get a top job done but for the time being the rustolem makes it one color instead of ten different colors with primer here an there.looks like you did a very nice job on yours and Im shure your happy that its one color too.One thing though is that I would like to see some of the other colors done. Ive only ever seen the black witch is ok,except in the one mag they did a little f**d with a roller and lots of wet sanding that one was off white.good job it looks great and the best part is you did it yourself

Re: My Rustoleum Adventure

Good job man, I'll be tackling that in another month or two. I did just start my tailgate, wanted too see it completely done to insure the color I picked was something I liked. All the brackets are done, tailgate is in primer, gunna finish shooting the tailgate today. Probably won't turn out as good as yours, it's a work truck, I just want the rust gone, and the body protected. Don't think I have what it takes to sand and sand...

Oh btw you add a hardner?

Re: My Rustoleum Adventure

Did you sand to bare metal or sand 400 grit over the existing paint?
Thanx

I only sanded to bare metal where i needed to apply bondo. Other than that just getting the surface smooth is the point. And no i didn't add any hardener. i think that i probably should have though. Maybe on the next one
