driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
Got my flip kit in my 78 c10 today... came down a LOT. wow like 8 inches after i took out a few leafs. I left in 4 leafs plus the overload. Its the summit racing kit with the little red bumpstop. The axel is about 1" from the bumpstop. Anyways, now when i give it light acceleration, theres a bang bang bang that i assume is the driveshaft. U-joint angles? Has anyone else had this problem? If the truck is coasting in gear there is no noise. If you give it gas then BANG BANG BANG. Not good.
Ive read something about the carrier bearing. If the mount adjustable? Any ideas??? I cant even drive the thing the way it is. |

Two piece or one piece drive shaft?
Did you flip kit come with shims to correct pinion angel? Could be out, at least that what it sounds like to me.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
Being that you've lowered the truck so much you probably need shims to get the pinion angel set right again. Though because it's a two piece it shouldn't be out bad, not as bad as it would if it were a one piece.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
the dirrections in my kit suggest swapping out the 2 piece for a 1 piece. i didnt, i just adjusted he height of the bearing to correct te angle and its all pretty straight now, better then it was stock.
i love your truck with rust, dents adn all

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
How do you adjust the carrier bearing? is it adjustable or do you have to cut it off and re-weld it?

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
The adjustment for the carrier is just a spacer and longer bolts.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
did your flip kit relocate the axle back at all? it could be that with the drop its causing your drive shaft to bottom out on one of the slip yokes. most likely its the one at the carrier but it could be at the tranny to. just something to check.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
Yes the flip bracket had the off center hole that pulls the axel back around an inch or so.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
Do I need to raise the bearing up, or lower it? Im looking online and getting all sorts of answers and none of them are the same.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
You need to move the carrier bearing up.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
sounds to me like the front of the rearend is huyting the floor. when you step kn the gas the angle goes up a little may be pointing up already cuz if the drop.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
I dont think its hitting the floor. Theres lot of room. It will hit the bumpstops before that happens. Theres about 1" between the rear end and the bumpstops right now. If you are in gear and coasting, there is no noise. As soon as you lightly tough the throttle, it starts banging. I think its just lowered too much. When you touch the gas, the rear end probably drops a little and that put the alignment out just enough to cause the noise. Its not a single bang. Its a bang bang bang bang bang. Sounds like everytime the driveshaft rotates, its makes a bang. As you step on the gas, the banging gets faster so its consistant with the driveshaft rotation.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
the angle could be off causing it to vibrate. it the carrier bearing is loose that could cause the noise

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
oh ok so the carrier bearing itself could be making the bang bang bang noise also. I just assumed it was the U-joints. Its an old beater truck so anything is possible. I just want to be able to go into the shop with as much info as I can to help them. They dont work on many lowered trucks. I hope this doesnt get too expensive.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
i betcha if you crawl under there and look .....i think you'll see some screwed up angles with your drive line.here's a pic of what i did.you need to raise the bearing up towards the floor.we cut off the bracket then welded in a flat piece then bolted the bearing to the new piece.that results in a straight angled shaft...it's been flawless for 4 years now.good luck.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
Good pic thankyou. I'll show that to the guy at the shop!
we put a 4 degree shim in the back today and the banging is gone, but there is still lots of vibrating. |

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
What air shock part number did you go with? I need some with about 18-20" extended length.

Re: driveshaft banging noise after flip kit install
I have no idea. I gave the guy the length between the mounts at ride height and he ordered them for me. I do have the shock entension brackets installed also.
