brake pedal return?
Is there a return spring for the brake pedal on a 1978 c10 with non-power disk brakes? If so, is it hidden somewhere out of view? My pedal doesn't return when depressed (have to pull back up with my foot) which also makes the brake lights stay on too. I'm just starting out trying to troubleshoot this...

I had a problem like that.
Turns out the bolt that holds the booster rod to the pedal was backwards and rubbing on the pedal mount. Another cause of this could be a bad booster. Does it hold vacuum after you kill the engine? Do you hear a sucking sound when you depress the brake pedal? Posted via Mobile Device

It doesn't have a brake booster, just the master cylinder bolted to the firewall... Its hard to tell if it makes a sound or not because right now there's only about an inch of travel in the pedal before the brakes engage. It looks like the seal on the inside of the cab where the pushrod goes in is leaking (or has leaked in the past) too due to the rust that's all over the pushrod and the pedal parts. Something might just be bound up, but if there was a spring that was missing that would be an easy fix

The spring is in the master cylinder.
When you are bench bleeding a master cylinder and your pushing the piston on the back, that spring is what is pushing back. If pushing the brake pedal to the floor and it doesn't come back up and the pedal is not binding then you probably need another master cylinder. |
