Re: i think im going satin black
Satin black does look good but everybody has it, I wanted to do mine the same way but now I'm going with something different. I would do the blue.

Re: i think im going satin black
X3----- Satin black is like the new red rims, Way over done, I painted my 54 ford John deere blitz black (satin style) a 4-5 years ago(In the process of repainting it another color), It was being done alot then but now every new guy to the classic car/truck scene first instinct is to paint there ride satin black....dont get me wrong it looks good thats why everyone does it , but after awhile at a show or get together theres no WOW factor Anymore, its like " Oh look another flat/satin black Vehicle".... But thats just my opinion..who cares what other people really think it's your truck paint it whatever color you desire, but I did like your original idea of satin blue or really any satin colors look good... Just my 2 cents..

Re: i think im going satin black
I am in the process of doing mine satin blue (steel blue) hot rod flatz. I really like the color and decided to do the top of the cab and grill in gloss white to be different.

Re: i think im going satin black
if you plan on satin black, might be worth your while to talk to markeb01. he did a killer job on his gmc.
for me, i like both sating black and satin blue - between the two, satin black probably a little more common (but still uncommon compared to everything else made these days). so go with what you know you'll like - either will look great. bodywork's gotta be just as spot on with satin as it does with gloss tho. Looking fwd to some pics of the finished product. |

How about a Hot Rod Flatz dark metallic blue? Im not sure if its in their lineup, but it sounds interesting.

Re: i think im going satin black
Go with what you feel, My truck was a satin black, I am going to do it in satin indigo blue. I want that 50's paint sort of the Old Navy trucks they used to have in the stores color.

Re: i think im going satin black
Hadn't herd any bad info on hrf but I liked the way it sprayed, seemed to cover very well. It's a single stage urethane i'm guessing omni makes it. One thing I did find out...since I have been doing it piece meal i will most likely have to shoot the whole truck once it's altogether. As you build coats it tends to shine more.

Re: i think im going satin black
The kid and I are probably going with Kirker Hot Rod black on our ‘65. It’s more a Satin than a flat. It’s a SS urethane.
I know it’s “overdone” if you look around on the internet, but here in Virginia, I can’t recall seeing one truck done like that. His is going to be a daily driver, so it will definitely stand out, plus he likes it. Heck I rarely see any trucks older than the square bodies, unless it’s a car show or cruise. I have been looking at some of the other colors though, and just ordered a color chip book and I might even play around with some matte clear on a different color on scrap before we decide.

Re: i think im going satin black
I think SS is the only way to go. As the matting agent can prove to be hard to work with from mix to mix and in some cases give you un even % of matt from area to area.
Check out TCglobal paint. Tons of flat colors and price is decent. www.tcpglobal.com

Re: i think im going satin black
I certainly like chrome or stainless trim on flat or satin black paint. It makes the trim really pop and keeps the truck from looking like a military vehicle. I’m adding the stainless windshield trim to mine because it also defines the glass area, instead of just looking like a dark mass.
I’d suggest choosing blue or black depending on the overall theme of the truck. Consider how the interior will look from the outside. And how will the wheels/tires and grille/bumpers affect the overall image. Hot rod black certainly is distinctive and popular, but may not be exactly what you’re after (or maybe it is)! I’d also suggest buying all the paint you’ll need at the same time, get a new empty container big enough to mix it all together in one big batch, then redistribute the paint back into the original cans. This will minimize the risk of applying different gloss levels between batches. Whereas my paint job was very easy being cheap air dry enamel, I’ve talked with a lot of owners that painted their cars/trucks with flattened urethane that were unhappy with the results. One guy had his reshot 7 times before it came out with a consistent gloss/flatness level over the entire vehicle. Painting the whole truck at one time also helps insure a matching gloss level, but technique is equally important. Overlap, panel coverage, and maintaining exact surface distance is critical with flattened paint, because there isn’t any method I’m aware to balance mismatched gloss level after the paint is applied.

Re: i think im going satin black
The nice thing about a ss flat is if you don't like it just clear it with gloss. 1 or 2 coats will give it a flat look, 3 or more and you have satin.

I had my hood sprayed with expoxy satin black after I louvered my hood and I love it. Plan to do the whole truck soon.

Re: i think im going satin black
MY 99 is satin blue i love the look BUT flat paint it a major PIA! u can,t buff out any issues and finger/hand prints stand out big time like if any part of your body touches is it leaves a mark im constanly wiping it down to get rid of were someone touch it or brused up against it. i used squeeg's single stage flat but a flattened/low gloss clear seams to not have as much of the problem with it.
