Problems running on ethanol, plus a few fun picts in Boise.

After living in Boise 3 years I finally got my truck out of storage and brought it up here from Utah. My original plan was to drive her the whole way 260 miles but half way she broke down and had to get a ride from a flatbed..The problem was a mixture of things dealing with spark and bad fuel and I figure water and crap in the tank. Has anyone had problems running on ethanol fuel in these old motors, everyone I talk too says its bad, I found a few places that still sell fuel with out ethanol but I was wondering if maybe I should try adjusting the timing and a few things to make it run on the ethanol fuel, I def see a difference on the performance and will try to always just by the good fuel while its still available. Well a few picts of the old trucks debut appearance in Downtown Boise ID..

Nice looking truck. I don't think ethanol is very good on fuel lines and I can't keep a lawn mower or a weed eater but a few years and I think it's the ethanol I WAS using in it. I've found a place near where I live that sells pure gas and thats what I'm going to run in my lawn equipment and my carbonated vehicles when passable.

Pepsi Cola? Couldn't resist...

SK hit it right on the head... when ethanol sits... it does mean and nasty things to rubber fuel lines and stuff.

Re: Problems running on ethanol, plus a few fun picts in Boise.

Thanks everyone for the compliments and response to ethanol..I got my truck running again like previously stated and definetly learned the lesson the hard way on letting these old girls sit, I drained the tank and changed all the fuel filters plus new plugs and wires and she runs great as long as I put 91 octane with no ethanol at 440 a gallon, ouch... Also one of ya asked what wheel im runnin they 295/50/15 tires on 15/10 rims. the brand of the wheel is ION, I pretty sure you can still find them on wheels site and even jegs has them If I remember right.

Nice looking truck and great pics! X2 on the post above. The new ethanol fuels don't work well with the old engines in our trucks. Luckily we don't have that fuel mix around here yet. There are lots of good articals on the net to read up about on it. It's not a good thing. Put some good fuel in her and i think she will be fine. Joseph

Re: Problems running on ethanol, plus a few fun picts in Boise.

I have no problems running ethanol in anything new or old, they all require the same thing to run. The problem with ethanol is "not running". It breaks down and turns into a useless toxic and less flammable liquid that needs to be disposed of...real great for the environment, right? It's the same as having water in your tank...what,15% is it? It's ok when fresh but it has virtually no shelf life,at least compared to good old real gasoline. It causes fuel system problems in anything it's in after a few months. If your truck started and ran a while it should only require draining the BS out and replacing with good fresh fuel. I'd run some Sea Foam through it.

Along with what special-k said, it also eats out your seals, gaskets and any material that is rubber or plastic.

Re: Problems running on ethanol, plus a few fun picts in Boise.

thats a nice truck like the two tone.....and there was a good read in hotrod mag a few months ago if i remember i will see what month it was, but the ethanol isnt bad but it is like special-k said it breaks down but the article was about running straight ethanol in carb engines and you do have to change over the fitting on the fuel lines and on the carb but the ethanol is better than straight pump gas for many reasons even gas thats not mixed with ethanol, ethanol is cheaper but it does burn more so it works out the same but the ethanol after it is burned cools quick unlike regular gas.......if you get a chance look it up it was a really good read and something to think about cause who knows what gas where going to be able to buy 5 years from now
