Rear Disc Brake Kit

I am still trying to decide on the best bolt on rear disc brake kit. I have a 1972 C/10 1/2 ton 12 Bolt. Any kits stand out that are better than others, or kits to avoid?

Thanks

Are you definitely wanting a "kit" or is budget a consideration? You can get rear brackets for the calipers and pick up some rotors and used calipers w/ or without e-brake for much less than the "kits"...you can even cross drill your own rotors...

Or are you looking for big brake performance? If so, consider mcGaughy's as well as Willwood and CPP

For basic or big brake kits, CPP does have good ones and buying from someone like Scottshotrods is good because CPP has many reported cust service/shipping issues but good product.

Another option is POL...they have some good products and are usually a little cheaper...

Did you have to modify your axle/housing at all for this kit? Do you know which kit specifically you bought?

This was the big bearing ford kit..5 on 4 1/2...but he has it for stock 12 bolt I think...quick call to Tobin will tell the tale.....your axle will have to be cut down to their specs in the area outside of studs.....but Tobin will have specifics......great guy...fast shipping.......super knowledgeable ....won't steer u wrong.............jim

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

I have looked at mostly the kits. I came across the mcGaughy's kit, and from what I read it said that the axles would need to be machined to work, maybe that's the case with all of them or maybe if brackets arent' used.

Thanks for all the feedback

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

I believe (but don't quote me on it... ) that CaptainFab makes some adapters/brackets (or something) to facilitate use/adaptation, etc (?) of newer Impala SS rear disk brake components. Might be worth asking him about that.

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

I put rear disc on the 68. It was a kit I purchased from ebay from seller isanti lawnman. It Was $399 and was complete. Only things I had to purchase were a pair of axle seals (not necessary but since I was there) a rear cover gasket, 2 cans of brake clean to clean everything up and some rear end dope. The kit installed very easily and the rotors were cross drilled and slotted. The truck stops great, only small issue was the intermediate cable was too short for use with th400 trans, so that will have to be made as the e brake cables are shorter than the originals. For $ 450 shipped to my front door I was really pleased.

Do you have a link to that kit? Couldn't find that seller on ebay...

Is that without emergency/parking brake? CPPs descriptions often suck.

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

i purchased there brackets and put together my own kit and saved $100
by using 88-93 k1500 rotors and s-10 metric calipers, that allowed me to use my 15" rims,

Al, I've seen your setup come up in several threads now. I keep going back and forth due to not having a parking brake. I only care due to state inspections. I'm done debating, going to weld up the holes tomorrow and move on. Surely I can find someone who won't check that.

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

........or you could open up the April issue of Car Craft magazine (page74) and see how to convert with some used part from your local junkyard-all the info needed for factory style disc brakes

Re: Rear Disc Brake Kit

I bought a CCP kit for a truck a couple of years ago. It uses the seville caliper style setup. The kit from isanti lawnman (which is Auto City Classic, if you've ever read a Hemmings, you have seen their ads) uses the same application of parts. I just talked to Chris over there last week. Their kit is the same as the one I purchased from CCP, only $200 cheaper, plus it has drilled and slotted rotors. I priced out buying their brackets ($75), and piecing it together myself, and it will cost more than their kit does.
