Power steering conversion problems.

Thanks to Sharpie, I was able to get my hands on a short water pump power steering pump and bracket. I put on the back bracket to just put the pump in place to see how things line up.

The problem is I already had to put 2 washers for spacers behind each bolt of the crank pulley to get it to line up with the water pump pulley. Now looking at the power steering pump, I need to come out another 1/2 inch at least, not only that but the pulley of the PS pump is not even at the same angle as the other two pulleys....

Any thoughts?

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

you need the red pulley in this picture and you only need a single groove upper pulley unless your running AC or something else

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

Yeah, i got the double pulley on the water pump because the stock water pump pulley was too big and it was interfering with the crank pulley.

Isn't the red pulley in the middle for long water pumps? I don't think it will line up with my water pump.

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

I have this one laying around. I think it is the same size as the said "red one".

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

You are one grove short on your crank pulley probably because your truck did not come with the P.S. option. Get a crank pulley with one more grove and you should be fine. Do not shim anymore out.

Changing the water pump pulley size changes the speed at which the pump rotates. Don't go too small with it or you will end up with cavitation at high revs, or it will start collapsing your lower radiator hose at higher speed.

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

If it were me doing that conversion, I would start combing the salvage yards for a vehicle (same or similar engine) and yank all the components out of it - including the harmonic balancer and pulleys, fan, p.s. pump and all brackets if able to do it. There's bound to be one somewhere and it just takes time to locate it.

When I converted my six cylinder I had a chance to grab all of the components from a six cylinder El Camino but didn't do it for lack of cash. I later pieced it together from different vehicles and it turned out to be a pain in the you know where to align everything.

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

I ended up buying a complete used set of pump and matching pulleys as my truck came with a bodged on later power steering pump and pulleys that didn't quite line up properly. It was much easier to throw on a complete set you know was going to work.

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

Ya, I searched the salvage yards originally for a PS pump and all the components. All I found were Long water pump versions of everything.... Living in a relatively low population rural area, that tends to happen - only get what you don't need.

Wink Re: Power steering conversion problems.

Here is what I have. 305 HO motor out of a camaro 86-87.
You need the crank pulley with 3 grooves.
Inner belt is for the alternator
Middle is AC belt
Outter is for power steeriing.
Sorry about the pictures it's hard getting down in there and snapping a shot.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Power steering conversion problems.

I would agree, the best thing to do is get all the pulleys off the same truck/car. If your not able to do that, get a crank pulley with 3 grooves like someone else said.

Summit sells spacers for your crank pulley problem. Your washers might not be perfect and could cause an imbalance. I have some spares you can have if you pay for the shipping.
There's a guy in AZ that sells pulley's on Ebay and has all kinds of pulley's for our truck's.

Here's a picture of the shims for reference. I've also have lots of pictures documenting this common problem.
