Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

Pretty sure a'c was available in 65, but not 100% positive/
327 wasn't available until 66 (in trucks). (Oops - missed that it was a C20 - the 327 might be original - but let's wait for one of the 3/4 tonner crowd to answer). 327 wasn't available in the C10.

I have a 65 c20 with factory air and it has a 327 motor, but I was told that these trucks didn't come with the 327. So now I'm confused.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

It could be a late late 64 but couls also be a vin swap. Be interested to know if the frame vin is the same as the cab but would make a great parts truck.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

I could be wrong, but in-dash A/C may have been available as a dealer add-on before '65 (don't quote me on this). Looked at the pics and it appears this one has been completely gone over inside and out somewhere in it's history. It should not be surprising to see incorrect or later equipment on it.

Seems it's down now. It states they used the Cool Pack A/C unit till 1964 and that it was 1965 when the in dash units were available.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

Actually a/c could be factory ordered at least as early as 63, but it was an underdash unit. 1964 was the first year for in-dash factory a/c in Chevy trucks. It's covered in the 1964 shop manual and owner's manual.

Charley what it boils down to, will you you be happy with out if its not original? If that's not a concern then this would be a good truck because it looks like everything its there. Now having said that I would not pay full price it its over priced in its condition its worth about $2000.00 to $2500.00 but not a penny more. There are trucks out here on craigs list pretty much every week for a lot less. Happy hunting.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

Need more info. This truck has it all, but was it built that way? Maybe not. Like I said, it looks to me as if it has been completely made over at least once in it's past, and to me that is a big red flag. Keep in mind I am absolutely NUTS about original stuff, so I may not be the one to ask. I'd say it's fully priced in it's present condition and a little over priced if it's a frankentruck. Only my opinion.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

From lookin at it alittle closer I think this is a dealer installed ac. The other stuff came stock which makes this a cool truck.

The 63 accessory manual and the shop manual both show ac.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

Looks like a factory install to me, but the only way to be sure would be to remove something & see if the A/C holes were cut after the truck was built or if they had factory paint on the edges. The dealer could install nearly the same exact setup as well, but most folks would opt for the cheaper underdash unit. With all those other options I'd bet it came w/it. They are definately rare, but that doesn't always equal way higher value.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

My '64 is an A/C truck, but the system was dealer installed. It looks exactly like the factory installed systems from '65 and on, but the only difference is on the firewall. The factory installed trucks have jig-drilled holes in the firewall, and the placement is exact. My truck definitely has hand-located holes in the firewall, as a few of them had to be "worked" by the installer back in '64 to get the feedthru tubes placed correctly. The grommets cover the holes, so it isn't anything to get upset about.

The factory accessory manual is a great reference for anyone wanting to learn more about the in-dash system. It's great reading.

Re: 1964 with fatory ac ?

As far as i know, that is a newer ac compressor. Looks like from 70/80's GM. The older ones had a big blocky looking compressor. Its possible to swap that stuff onto a truck. You need to see if someone has some pictures of a factory setup. Look for differences in the locations of hoses and the like going through the firewall.
