Angle ????
I am putting in a 5.3 with a 4L60E trans in an '82 truck. We have raised the front crossmember and are doing other mods for better handling. We plan on doing custom mounts and setting the engine back some for better weight distribution.
With the frame level, what angle should the engine/trans be installed at? I currently have it a 4 degrees (tailshaft pointing down). I would like to get the motor lower, but the oil pan would need to be changed and a notch cut in the crossmember (which I am willing to do). The trans pan is about 1/4" above the bottom of the frame. I do not want anything hanging below the frame. Is the 4 degrees good or should I go flatter to say 2 degrees? Thanks guys,

Re: Angle ????
4* is the approx recommended angle to install these engines. Mine sits roughly at 4*, which puts the pan on a slight downward slope going back. At its lowest its within a 1/4" of the crossmember.

Re: Angle ????
Should be at the same angle as your pinion shaft at ride height.

Re: Angle ????
Thanks, that is what I was thinking.
I will set the pinion so that it will be in line while underload.

Re: Angle ????
Just to be clear. The engine angle and pinion angle should be parallel but not inline with each other. Here is the Dana Spicer rules for u-joints. Making the two angles parallel guarantees rule 2 is okay. Rule 1 is so the needles in the bearings have to rotate some.

Re: Angle ????
This is an old post, but I need some information. I am putting a 5.3 into a 55 suburban. I know the engine should be 1-5 degrees sloped to the rear with 3 degrees the recommended angle. My question is; is that measured with the frame level or as the truck sets?
Thanks |
