ID LS1 plz
I am going to buy this motor from a friend. He has had it laying around in his shop for sometime but says he believes it is 03-04 Yukon 5.3 with 4l60e tranny
Can you folks please help me be sure what I am buying? It has 862 heads and says 4.8/5.3 stamped on block. I would like to know for sure displacement,yr and what you might do to beef up a little ? I plan on putting it in a 1972 Chevy LWB fleetside, Driver with a milage and a little muscle would be great.. Also like to keep it EFI Thank you Dan If there is somewhere I need to look for ID , Plz advise |

no way to tell displacement for sure on the 4.8/5.3 from the outside. Stick a light in the combustion chamber and see if its flat or if there is a dish.
from the heads its a pre-07 4.8 or 5.3. Does it have dbw or dbc? In terms of beefing it up, name a budget...like any other motor, theres a million things you can do.

Not sure on DBW or DBC
As for budget, I'd say 1K - $1500 if possible. Again I do not need a hotrod just a nice responsive motor that gets decent mileage |

Look at the front driver's side of the block. It should say the displacement. 4.8, 5.3, 6.0.
As for helping performance, a mild cam, stiffer valvesprings, and matching stall converter should do the trick.

Yup. Whichever it is should be marked. Also, check the head gasket near the center of the exhaust ports-- should have a tab stamped with displacement. Your pics unfortunately don't tell much. The only other way I know of is to look at the pistons...

You need to look at the top of the piston, that's really the only way.
If the top of the piston is flat - 4.8 If the top of the piston is "dished" - 5.3. Easiest way is to pull the head off and look. But you'll have to replace head gaskets and head bolts. Otherwise, like brew city said, put a light in the CC and rotate the engine until you can see the top of the piston through the CC. Sometimes hard to see, just need the right light... For you budget, I would recommend a 04 ls6 cam and springs. The cam is about $300 new and the springs are about $70 or so. That should get you an extra 30 -40HP. Then maybe CAI and headers. If you change cams, I would do a full gasket set as well (Fel-Pro $300)

or just pull a head and measure the stroke. 4.8L has a 3.27 inch stroke and a 5.3L has a 3.78 inch stroke. The bore is the same size on each.
