Door handle buttons

Why are the outside door handle buttons pushed in on some trucks. How do you fix it?

Pushed as in stuck? I'd love to know too? Mine will stick from time to time, usually a good smack will pop them back out though.

If there sticking I would try lubricating the channel on the inside, this requires taking off door panel the spray inside handle button.

My handles are doing the same thing from time to time. Press the button and it won't pop back out. (Mine is an 81)

You will need to replace the handles. If you remove the handle, you will see the plate on the back side that aligns the button is falling apart from corrosion.

I agree ... there isn't a lot of metal holding that plate in place so it doesn't take much corrosion for it to break free and no longer retain the return spring.

As an alternative to replacing the handles, I have had good luck fixing this type of problem by riveting in a small section of angle iron. One leg of the angle is drilled for the pushrod to pass through and oriented so it replaces the original plate. The other leg of the angle is oriented so it can be riveted to the inner part of the handle. Use rivets with countersunk heads so they don't interfere with fitting the handle back into the door opening.

It will pop back out nice and strong. It's just getting stuck in if pressed back fully sometimes.

Okay, in that case it's probably just a lack of lubrication. Like chevy88 posted earlier, you can remove the interior door panel and spray the back/inside of the handle.
