Correct valve cover decals?
What are the correct decals for a 1969 c 10 350? For the valve covers that is.
I have seen 350 invader listed in some catologs, others just black and gold 350 decals, others list hp decals. Some list tonawanda build some list flint. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
I've seen some 69's with the gold "350" decal, or whats left of them. I've seen lots of others with no decals at all, but they may have been worn off or removed in the 30-40 years between new and when I saw them.

Invader were used on the GMC's if I remember and most of the Chevy's had the Tonawanda engine sticker

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
My 69 Custom 30 wrecker had remnants of a sticker on the passenger side only, nothing on the driver side. Looked like original paint on them both. From what I can tell, it was a large 350 decal, possibly. Nobody repro's them yet that I know of. Would love to get one or two for my resto...

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
LMC lists a pn 38-0258 "decal 350 gold on black", 1 required for 69-71 valve cover decal. They also list pn 38-0259 "Tonawanda #1 valve cover decal for 72 only again with 1 required. I haven't seen them but I am going to order some. Seems to answer application questions if they are correct.

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
These valve cover decals are year specific. 1969 used the black and gold square decal as shown in photo below. 1970 used the large "8 350" decal. This decal is similar to the "8 350" front fender emblem. Anyone have an original 1971 photo?

. . . .
In this earlier post, the bottom picture was said to be from a 1972 GMC !!! I wonder if the 8 350 decal was used from 70-72 on ALL 350's - Chevy and GMC ? . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
I see the common denominator in all these posts is that the decals haven't lasted. Are the newer ones made of a better material or does the heat and wear and tear make those turn to crap, too?

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
The decal on my 69 only made it 1-2 years. Unfortunately, I don't recall with certainty what the design was, but I think it was just the black and gold "350".

The 350 decal I have on mine has been on there for a few years, but I don't drive it very much. When I have the new one made . . . it's going to be made so it will look nice 20 years from now. I was hoping that someone else would have some more original pictures of Blazer, Bursurban or Truck engines from magazines back in 69-72 to help narrow this down . . . ANYONE ? . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
The missing '71 link has finally arrived. So, 68-69 same, 70 and 71 same, 72 used the tin foil emission decal. 67?

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
I have a 69 307 and the oil cap is right were the decal is on the pic. I know this may be a dumb question, but could my valve covers be on backwards?

I guess the holes would line up, so they could be on the wrong side. The driver's side of the one I saw today ( pictured below, again ) didn't have any remains of a decal. The owner said he'd had it for three years and it didn't have one when he bought it. I've seen ( and have pictures saved ) of others with the oil cap on the passenger side. The interesting thing about this new 307 original is that the owner didn't know anything about THIS website !!! . . . which makes me wonder how many more valve cover decals on original engines are out there that we'll never know about ? . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
My 69 with a 350 has had the oil fill on the left side since new. Otherwise it would be covered by the A/C bracket. I've personally never seen a 67-72 small block with it on the right side.

There aren't many with the oil fill on the passenger side, but here are a few I've saved. Some seem to have it closer to the center of the valve cover ( especially the ones with factory air ) . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
I also saw one on here that said "307 Thriftmaster" or something like that. I believe it was factory correct. Anyone know for sure? And how is it possible that everything else is repopped for these trucks, but not the sticker? wierd

The first picture below, is from H&H Classic's website - they seem to have the 307 decal that has been installed on the valve cover in the second picture. Just below the second picture, is a previous thread answering the "Thriftmaster" question. I didn't see an "8 350" decal A N Y W H E R E on H&H's website !!! ( but at least we found the 307 decal ) . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
Good question, why doesn't the repop people make this 70-71 8 350 decal? They make just about every car engine decal imaginable, turbo fire this, turbo thrirft that.

. . . .
The boys and I took the truck out to it's first "real" car show since I got it back from it's restoration last October. As we backed in next to a 71 in fairly original shape, I glanced under the opened hood and saw THIS: . . . . |

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
I've still never solved the mystery for my '70 GMC 402 Longhorn. So far the only trucks I've seen with my particular decal were Longhorns, yet I can't imagine they had a longhorn-specific engine decal.
Other than my truck and the brochure drawing earlier in this thread I've never seen another like it. If not for the brochure I'd think something was wrong! I wound up, like everyone else, using an "Invader 400" even though its wrong because I just haven't found anyone with a good enough original to undertake a reproduction... but I'll keep bring it up in threads like this in case anyone surfaces with one!

Re: Correct valve cover decals?
So...68&69 have just a 350 sticker and 70&71 have 8-350 stickers.also to reproduce them would require a copyright permission from GM? How do other companies get permission?
Also I think my pass side cover has the oil fill so would the sticker be moved to center or would it not fit? Driver side doesn't get a sticker ever? There must be a memo somewhere at Gm on how and where to place stickers? I would chip in for the copyright fee $5 in addition to the price of a correct sticker. Of course having one Add for yourself is not infringement but selling them might be. Perhaps you could give one away with the purchase of a t-shirt? Idk. Does GM have a correct truck in a museum? Re: Correct valve cover decals?
. . . .
UPDATE: In regards to the copyright laws, I sent an email to the owner of a company that I've been buying parts from and received the following answer: "The reproduction manufacturer pays the original trademark holder a license fee to reproduce the part and a royalty percentage for all the pieces he sells." "There's usually a minimum dollar amount on the royalty volume" NOW WE KNOW !!! . . . . |
