5-speed swap HELP???
I have a 1972 GMC Longbed that has a 350 with the stock auto transmission and I am wanting to put a 5-speed manual in it. I am planning on going with a TKO 500 but I heard that the TKO 500 is a little bit taller than the T-5. The reason I'm wondering is my truck has the low hump tunnel and I want to make sure that it will work with the lower tunnel before I jump into the deepend so to speak. Any help will be much appreciated y'all.
Thanks: Billet man! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 5-speed swap HELP???
I'm putting a Tremec in my '67 - I will post pictures when it's done. It's in the truck right now but from what I can see, it's not very tall - I'm gonna have a custom tunnel made, but it looks like a high hump will work just fine. When you order the tranny, just get it built for the middle position so the shifter is not too far back.

Re: 5-speed swap HELP???
i believe that you will need to use a high hump for the TKO.
I have had a TKO in my 71 shortbed stepside for many years now. Here is a link where I discussed this years ago with a picture of the TKO installed with the low hump floorboard in place. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=223031 |

Re: 5-speed swap HELP???
I really appreciate all the help ya'll!!! I was looking for more information on the Keisler SS700 but I couldn't find much about it. One of the main reasons I was looking at the TKO 500 is www.hurstdrivelines.com makes a transmission kit for the 1960-72 GM Trucks and it comes with everything for the swap, plus a manual is SOOOO much more fun than an auto!!!!!! I just talked to the tech there and he said that they put one of those transmissions in they're '66 CHevy with the low tunnel and it fit just fine but I dont know if the tunnel is the same size on my '72 as it is on they're '66. Any idears????

If you type "5 speed swap" into the Google search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com and click on the GOOGLE button you will find lots of threads on the subject. Just make sure the thread you are looking at refers to your style of truck. (Hits will include all years) LockDoc

Re: 5-speed swap HELP???
I have a tko600 in my 70 with a low hump....fits like a glove but was a little close in the pinch weld area where firewall meets floor pan, but I dont think I even did any bending . I used an auto crossmember and left shifter in the rear factory mounting hole but mounted it backward to move it forward a couple inches to clear my bench seat. Drive it daily and LOVE it!!! Glad to answer any question or try to send you pics.
