Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
I need to do a from drum to disc conversion on a 67 but to a 6 lug. I'm thinking I only need the spindle and outer rods from a local seller according to this guide:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...68&postcount=4 Then picking up 6lug rotors, new calipers/pads, and possibly new ball joints as listed in that guide. I already have a new set but technically for a 67/68. Am I missing anything? |

Like I posted in that thread,... 2) 67-70 truck owners can now purchase "year specific" standard and drop spindles, from many aftermarket suspension vendors. * No need to change ball joints. * No need to change tie rod ends. * These new "conversion disc brake spindles" are a true "bolt-on" mod to add disc brakes to your truck. Like these: http://www.performanceonline.com/196...dle-Set-16683/ $228.99 every day.

If I can help someone on the boards move parts and save money I would rather do that. IF I can. Naturally I don't want parts I can't use. |

There is a off chance I have 5 to 6 lug "adapters" on my truck. I bought it a few months back and am yet to pull off the wheels and look, but I recall the last owner saying something about having them converted with adapters at 100 foot pounds of torque etc etc. I may reuse the adapters as I can get new 5 lug rotors for $33 each. Like I said before though, IF it can be done this way. |

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
Using 72 spindles is going to require you to spend alot more money than using the 63-70 conversion spindles.
1) Ball joint change 2) Tie rod change. 3) Special tie rod adapter sleeve to convert 5/8" tie rods to 11/16" diameter tie rods. $50-$60 a pair. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Don't forget your 6-lug stock wheels won't clear the calipers. 71-87 stock, 6-lug wheels off a 4x4 will.

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
I figured my 1969 suspeension was all worn, so I upgraded to 73-87 spindles, a arms and tie rods.
What are the odds the a arm bushings, balljoints, tierods, etc.. on your 40+ year old truck are good? I upgraded to the 73-87 stuff added new parts. I used the A arms, centerlink and spidles from the 73-87. Bigger a arms, bigger bushings, bigger ball joints. All good upgrades for a driver. I used the CPP 6 lug rotors. My stock 1969 steelies cleared the roter set up as well.

This is a great idea if you are replacing everything. Especially if you can refurbish everything first and then just swap the part on a weekend. I believe the pre-'71 steelies will work on the rotors,... its the calipers that cause the interference. Got any pics of your steelies?

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
My factory 69 6 lug wheels would not clear the caliper and would hit in certain spots. I had to run pre-71 wheels to clear the caliper.

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
buy the cpp parts from summit racing it is cheaper and FREE shipping...stay away from CPP
you need the 63-70 spindles, 71-87 -- rotors, calipers, bearing seal kit. 1- 2psi check valve and the custom fittings for your master and port valve to put the valve inbetween. And remove the stock 10psi check valve from the master. The oem wheels just touch the rim and you can grind a piece off the caliper(the brake pad really) for them to work or just get new rims.

Run a disc/drum or disc/disc prop valve (or an after market adjustable prop valve),... and the correct disc brake master cylinder,... and you are good to go.

This is frustrating. Now I have to consider the wheels I am restoring may not even fit the disc brake setup I want to install.

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
I would buy a full kit, but spending $1300 on something that appears to run sub $300 just breaks my balls and my brain.
A puzzle is exactly what I didn't want. As an engineer I feel compelled to figure this out. |

I can pick up Oreillys 1973 rotors and loaded calipers for $120. I'm sure bearings and seals would only be a few bucks more. |

Re: Another drum to disc conversion question for the front page
You can find the 6 lug 71-87 wheels relatively cheap. I bought 5 for about $200 shipped to me and turned around and sold two the day I got the 5 in.
I have one left if your interested. It would need to be sandblasted and painted. |
