Re: flowmasters on 454?

I'm running 40 series on mine and it's plenty loud. If you wan.t to go that route look into the summit street and strip mufflers. They run 30 bucks each and sound real aggressive. I just put a set on my 76, for the price and sound I'm happy.

Re: flowmasters on 454?

if you ike the crisp crack of straight pipes i wouldnt go with anything that flowmaster makes. on a stock engine they sound like chewbacca and with stock exhaust pipes and scats it sounds like a boat. my summit welded muffler(flowtech so another holley compony) sound pretty crisp and dont have a constent drone. im not sure what 10 are like but every lifted truck in my hick town has a flowmaster 40 and i just dont care for them at all

Re: flowmasters on 454?

EBay has a knock off version for $35 bucks. Search single chamber mufflers.

Re: flowmasters on 454?

I run the 10's on my 77 burb with a 454. They sound pretty good. Deep and a little throaty on idle and they're not as annoying as glass packs IMHO. The only thing that I think that would make them sound better is headers as I run stock manifolds. Gotta save my pennies I guess.

That was exactly what I was about to say, spintech sounds Great on 454's.
I had a set of 40'series on my truck and it is cammed, aluminum head 454 and honestly I didn't like the sound of it.. It didn't give the motor any lope it was just constant noise and alot of noise was coming through the muffler into my cab compared to others I've had...

Re: flowmasters on 454?

had them on mine... I'm now using the 30's. no difference in sound at all (but my motor isn't stock either), just got more torque from the added back pressure.

Your dyno pulls didn't improve because of 'back pressure', kiddo. If you actually believe that drivel, you have a lot of research to do.

No engine made likes back pressure. Your gain in torque was possibly from increased exhaust velocity. This is why some engines will run better overall with a 2-1/5 inch pipe over a 3 inch pipe. There is more exhaust velocity a lower rpm/smaller engine will get more flow from a small pipe over a 3" pipe!

Apply this to cyl heads as well on the intake port runners

I like the sound of spintechs or the super 44's, but look into cut-outs as well.

Yep, ran the single chamber flow masters on my 79 454 pickup along with headers and a custom bent 3" dual system with an "H" pipe for many years. As I got older I got sick of the noise however, I could be heard coming a mile away

Recently I swapped to a 502. Since I was not interested in how that might of sounded I pulled the single chambers off and installed a pair of Pypes Street Pro's. Couldn't be happier, much more livable.

I run the super 40's with a 3" "X" pipe system on my 454 chevelle. It's a bit on the loud side but I don't drive it much.

Sounds great! I also plan on running the spintechs behind my big block, if I ever finish the damn thing.
