Whats needed?

I got offered a 99 gmc motor to put in my 64. Wondering what's involved in swapping in the motor. I'm def interested but don't have any experience with these newer motors. I'm old school and always run older motors. Don't know about mounts, wiring, intake, ? I have a 76 350 in my truck now but it's been giving me problems. Thanks guys

Re: Whats needed?

Well its Fuel injected so you would need a computer....

I also beleive you can buy intake manifolds made for a carberator and remove the injection

Re: Whats needed?

get a intake for it and throw a carb on it, I think you might need a ignition module without running a computer too. MSD would work

Just make sure you get a manifold specifically built for converting the EFIs to carb not just any SBC intake will work.

Otherwise should work just fine, but I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in. It would be nice to have a roller cam block in there for durability

Re: Whats needed?

Should be the same as a small block, This is exactly my plan, find a low miles 5.7l vortec in a junkyard, pull all the intake and computer junk for sale, install a performer intake conversion, carb, electric fuel pump, looking at 260-280 HP 340+tq all for probably 1500 or less.

Re: Whats needed?

If it is a Vortec 5.0 or 5.7, then it is basically just a small block. You can remove all the injection and ignition and install an aluminum Vortec intake and a carb, along with a conventional HEI distributor. You will need to be sure that the gear on the distributor is compatable with a factory type roller cam. If need be you can remove the gear from the original distributor and install it on the new distributor. You will need to use the flexplate that comes with the '99 engine, as the one on your '76 350 will not fit. If you have a manual trans, you will need a flywheel for a '86 and newer small block. The water pump, pulleys, and accessory brackets on your current engine should swap over.

If the engine is the LS style engine, that is a whole different engine and will require more work to install it and get it running than what I described above.1999 was a transition year for the engines, so I believe it could be either.

Re: Whats needed?

I'm hoping it's a vortec cuz I know nothing about ls engines and don't wanna deal with going the ls route. I asked my friend to get me the block numbers, hopefully I know by tomorrow
