22x14 rear end setup.

Hey everyone I am a newbie at this stuff, I've been a ricer for a long time messing around with hondas. Anyway I came to my scenses and started a real build, dropmember 68 with a Big Block!

My question is that I have a 12 bolt rear end that I need to shorten, I don't have my bed side pieces, does anyone run 22x14 deep lip wheels in the rear so I could get an idea on how much to shorten my housing?

any help would be appreciated!

thanks,
Shane

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

You gotta have your wheels first.
The backspacing of the wheels will dictate how much you narrow the rearend.
Do it right.
Buy wheels and tires first,... then measure,... then narrow the housing.
That's how the pros do it.
Too much money to guess.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

Yep, get the wheels first. I almost found this out the hard way with my 63; I wanted 3.25 b.s. and my wheel manufacturer said it would cost extra for the wheel I wanted so I stuck with 3.75 b.s and once mounted the tires barely clear due to the tire bulge and wheel lip width.

That could have been a $800 mistake for the half inch I thought I had.

If you still don't have bed sides when you get the wheels and tires, find another stock truck and measure it up. Make sure to give yourself an inch on each side more than you think. You can always run a small spacer to make up for too narrow of an axle but too wide can't be corrected without new wheels or re-re-doing the axle narrowing.

Edit: You should start a build thread so we can all see your progress.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

Have you found tires to fit a 22x14 rim? I looked for those when I started putting together my next build and couldn't find any, I had to go with 24x15.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

Goodyear g-force tires 305x40xR22. You said you went with a 24x15 wheel that's huge. Here's my wheels, can't decide which one!

305 isn't wide enough for a 14 inch wheel

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

I just found that out that a 305 will only fit up to a 11.5 wide rim so I'll keep looking for a big enough tire.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

I know a 24x14 requires a 405/25r24 tire. I don't think a 335 is wide enough. A 335 would be good for a 24x12.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

14" = 355.6 mm. So for a 14" wide wheel, the narrowest tire you'll want to use is a 355.

(forgot bead thickness) A 14" wide wheel is actually 15" from lip to lip. A 385mm tire would give 15.15" tread width. 375mm = 14.76" tread width.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

I will start a build thread soon. My build will be called SINISTER, this truck will look mean sitting still. I'm shooting for a grayish silver House of Kolor paint job with the 454SS logo on the side. That paint scheme with the those big aggressive bad boyz tucked in the rear ought to set this truck off!

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

i gotta say from reading this thread, i too am interested in narrowing my rear axle. Sounds like deciding on tires first , then ordering wheels, then narrowing the axle is the way to go. if you end up buying some odd ball custom wheel obtaining tires might be impossible. its alot easier to find the perfect tire size you want then ordering a custom wheel .... than it will be to order a custom tire.

whats the widest wheel tire combo people have seen with stock frame rails on a c10 with inner frame mounted suspension.

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

Interesting choice for wheel, but I'm interested to see how it turns out. What about the front though? I doubt that Fuel makes anything with an offset compatible for a dropmember application?

Re: 22x14 rear end setup.

I am running a 12" wheel on a stock axle, the stock 68 rear is shorter than the late 70 up axle, order the correct back spacing and you should be fine I would think
