What headers for lowered big block '72?
I have a '72 with a 454 & the truck headers hang way too low. The truck is dropped 4.5" in the front & 5" in back, the headers sit about 2" off the ground. Anybody found any headers that will fit and not hang so low?
Thanks! |

I bought some Sanderson but have not installed them yet. They should keep it above the frame rail.

Re: What headers for lowered big block '72?
I used Patriot Clipster headers on mine. They were intended for a Chevelle. Purchased mine from Summit. I had to modify the motor mount bucket on the drivers side (the portion that bolts to the engine - 1972 big block only mounts, I believe), in order for them to clear. Also redid the shift linkage in order for the exhaust to be tucked up nice and tight - got rid of the cross shaft. Otherwise, no other clearance issues. If you have 71, or earlier engine mounts, I would think you should have plenty of clerance for these headers. Here's a few pics.

Re: What headers for lowered big block '72?
My 69 has a 4.5/5 drop. I also have a 454 big block and have hooker full length ceramic coated headers installed. I have at least 5-6" off the ground still.

My truck is pretty slammed and 4.5/6 drop and I'm running the Chevelle 70-72 Hooker Super Comps and have no issues at all...

Re: What headers for lowered big block '72?
Sanderson long tube headers specifically for the 67-72 truck. Mine was lowered 3.5 in front and 5 in the rear. As you can see, the exhaust stay's between the frame rail flanges....

I have Sanderson headers (shorty), and they stop right above the oil pan.

I have always ran BBC long tubes built for 70 and up Camaros, they tuck in tighter to the block and suck up closer to the floor....fit these trucks and the squares up thru the late 80's rather nicely

Do any of you know of a header that will work with a 4.5 drop in the front 5 in the back that will also clear the clutch linkage on a 67?

Ewww.. Clearing clutch linkage is a whole other deal... I run the stainless clipsters an our Cheap Bastard truck and am really happy with the fit.

Re: What headers for lowered big block '72?
Does anyone know if any of these headers will work with gm bowtie heads-the ones that come on the zz502? I am told that there is clearance issues with the flange hitting the headbolts in a few places. I can't see buying ceramic headers and grinding on them to clear. So far the only ones I have found are the hedman 66103 that claim to clear the bolts. Any other options would be great! Thanks
