Speedometer not working.

We know the speedometer in the dash is good and the cable is good, what would make the speedometer not work?

Re: Speedometer not working.

If you're sure the cable is connected to the speedo and to the trans, my guess is a stripped speedo gear in the trans.

Connect a drill to the trans end of the cable to make sure the cable is turning and the speedo works. If it works with that, I'd pull the speedo gear and take a look at it.

Re: Speedometer not working.

If the gear is bad, do you know where I could find one to replace it?

Re: Speedometer not working.

You can call a transmission shop and see if they have a new or used one or you can buy a new one from summit.

Re: Speedometer not working.

Believe it or not, I was able to buy the gears from my local Chevrolet dealer earlier this year.

Re: Speedometer not working.

No, it's very easy. Unscrew the cable, take the retainer off, make sure you mark the speedo housing so you have the right position when you install it back, then you can pull it right out of the housing. Sometimes the gear stay in when you pull it out, sometimes it stays in the the transmission. Put the new on in, and everything back together. Replacing the speedo gear is very easy. I would suggest taking the cable off and hooking it up to a drill and seeing if the speedometer actually works before doing the gear. I know you said the gauge and cable is good, but you didn't say how you tested it.

Re: Speedometer not working.

Thanks for sharing that site. It pretty awesome with all the stuff they are offering. Especially for conversions that some of us do.

No problem. Not sure how their pricing compares, hope you find it useful. I have used it as a reference several times.

Re: Speedometer not working.

This is what the inside of the speedometer cable looked like when we took it out of where it hooks up into the transmission, so we need buy a new one. The gear is just fine still.

Re: Speedometer not working odometer working

I cant seem to figure out my problem be reading thru these threads. I assume that both the speedometer and odometer both work off the same cable. I have a 63 c20 w/ a 3 speed manual (column shift). When I drive it the odometer turns at a normal looking rate, I haven't gps'd it, but I seems pretty normal. I get nothing on the speedometer needle. When I pulled the cable from the tranny and spun it by hand the speedometer needle worked fine. I plugged it back in to the transmission and still no speedometer but the odometer still works.
? How can the cable be spinning to work the odometer - seems the connection in the tranny is good , right? but not work the speedometer? Plus I can spin cable by hand below and it works the speedometer needle, so that connection seems good, but why not while driving even though the odometer is working. doesn't make sense to me
