Changing amps
What are the differances between 4 8 ohms speakers and how do I know which setting to put the amp on? I have a 4 channel I want to use and take out the old one. The old one is a 4 channel also but less power.
If I hook it up and don't change anything how will I know if it's right are not? I don't want to tear the speakers out of the truck to findout which they are.

Are the speakers factory or aftermarket? 99.9% of aftermarket speakers installed are 4 ohm.

If you hook it up the same, it should be fine. As long as the speaker rating of the amps is the same (or the new on is better) you should be fine.

Well it works fine I guess. I need to get some pictures of the hookups so I can ask some tech ?'s about the differant settings and see which ones I need to use.

Drove the truck today. Didn't notice much differance in quality of sound but it was louder.
Didn't have to turn the volume up to 50 to hear it.

if you meter the speaker impediance,it should read slightly less then it is, or marked

Depending on what speakers you have connected to what channels, you will want to switch at least one channel to "FULL", looks like both pairs are set to "HPF" for high pass filter meaning everything bellow a certain frequency is being filtered out before coming out the speaker (amp is more efficient when using filters).
If all the speakers are the same size, try one switch on full, leave one on HPF and see what it sounds like, then switch, try, and see, then try FULL for all 4 channels. If you have a large set on one and a smaller set on another, but the larger set on FULL and leave the smaller one on HPF. That way you get the full range of frequencies in the larger speakers and filter out the bass from he smaller speakers to keep them from sounding like ass. Here is a quick amp setup howto: Put the filter switch in FULL for both channels Turn the bass boost off Turn the input level down Turn the crossover frequency to half Play some music you like a good level (but not above 3/4 max volume) Adjust one pair at a time. Adjust the gain until the volume is where you want it with minimal distortion. Use the crossover frequency to adjust the filter Use the bass boost if you like that The trick is a combination of gain, volume, filter, and boost to get the best sound out of what you have. If you need to use more than 3/4 gain or 3/4 volume to reach your listening level, your amp is underrated for the speakers you have, or you just need more power and speakers.

I have 2 10" subs that are cheap Wal Mart brand "Road Gear".
Then I have 3 ways under the seat JVC I think. I know the 2 subs are sorry but all I want is a nice sounding system not a high thumping one. I plan to upgrade the 10" sometime after the new year with some better ones. Under the seat.

personally, a better quality amp/speakers/head unit will completely change the way it sounds. if you are into or need that type of thing. |

The amp was free and so I decided to use it. I'm not really into the loud music just want to hear my oldies nicely when riding down the road, planning to do the HRPT next June and want the tunes ready for the 3000 mile round trip.

unfortunately nice sounding is usually more expensive than thumping, but I get what you mean.
Follow jimmydeans advice. It's all trial and error if you've never done it before, and even if you have, you need to get it dialed in.

At some point I want to get some better subs but not going for really big bass. I have the old amp may hook it up to the front speakers and see how it sounds. I have a very old unit for them now but it's like 100 watts max.

LPF (low pass filter) on the Subs, FULL on the 6x9's will likely give you the best sound without trying to put too much bass in the 6x9's or try to use the subs as tweeters in HPF mode.
