What is stock headlight trim supposed to look like?

Here's my truck. Notice how the trim around the lights is dark. Not sure if its rust or what? What was it like originally for this truck? '69 LWB Custom20. Is it supposed to be chrome looking like the replacements you can buy?

Pretty sure supposed to be chrome. Probably got rusty and scratched up and PO decided a coat of paint would look a little better.

My `70 panel has black trim around the light, i never painted it, P.O. never did anything on the truck. Some trucks might have come that way.

Factory correct has the black outline and the black headlight door.
Here are some factory 69-70 clips and a truck I have shown before that is overall very close to your truck. Last is a very original '69 low mileage camper.
If you don't have one yet a factory brochure has nice information and a reprint is very affordable.

Another question to Tim, or anyone else. Should the grille insert behind, that has the squares pattern be black? What about the edge of the insert behind the piece that says chevrolet? On the blue truck, it looks black. On the gold one it is sort of a gray color. Mine is gray like that, and I'm trying to figure out if it is supposed to be black or not?

Think 70CST's picture pretty much covers it but here are some '69 pasteups.

Yeah, but he has a different insert than I do. His has horizontal slats, and mine has squares. With that blue truck you posted, I can't tell of it is black or if it is just dark. What I'm gathering, is that perhaps the square pattern grille insert should be black, but the plastic looking edges behind the piece that says chevrolet, should be left gray?

Re: What is stock headlight trim supposed to look like?

Thanks guys. And, as always Tim thanks for the info and the photos.

This is great to know. Looks like I can just restore the ones I've got, and paint them black

The 69s and 70s were not only painted satin black, they were also steel rather than aluminum.

They look so much better in black.
I know it's dumb, but a pet peeve of mine is seeing a 69-70 with chrome or silver ones.

That looks really good. I'm looking forward to restoring mine and painting them. Much cheaper than buying new ones

I'm sure that my headlight doors on my '69 are aluminum. They're originals and they were black....well-aged so kinda dark grey. But Aluminum....not steel.

Dig the late model Chev wheels on your rig Mister-B. Same ones that are on my '06 Silverado 2500HD.

Hey, thanks. I still need to get the center caps. Hoping to go to a junkyard sometime, and find some for dirt cheap
