Re: what would cause a tooth to break off a ring gear
Wear. Period. If the rear diff ever got overheated the ring gear can work harden and become brittle. A snap shift will be able to break a tooth then. A transmission that shifts quick keeps the clutches from slipping when they apply. This increases clutch plate and friction plate internals as much as double thier average life span. My freinds 700r4 has competition valving and will chirp 1st and 2nd on the street under light throttle and will bark the tires under full throttle at the track up to third gear
If your pinion gear broke then the issue was in the pinion gear not the trans. Especially if your diffrential was the original. Have your u joints checked and replaced as well those get the most stress from hard shifting out of the whole drivetrain. Once those are replaced the driveshaft is usually balance checked so its a good idea all around What trans do you have. There are three types of automatic shifting. The shift that feels good on grandmas butt , the shift that is firm and slightly hard and propels the truck forward, and a crash shift. A crash shift is not good and usually happens when know it all mechanics try modding thier trans for a "homemade shift kit" the trans stalls and then rams the clutches together with no overlap between the shifting gears. This breaks things Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what would cause a tooth to break off a ring gear
Ok describe how it shifts. When it shifts does it shake or rattle the truck or does it jerk the truck forward

Re: what would cause a tooth to break off a ring gear
Ok if it stalls for a sec then the trans is crash shifting. Not a good thing. Luckily th350s grow on trees. It's gonna have to be fixed. Hopefully it's just a valve body issue and can be easily fixed from there.
Know any history on the trans? If it was rebuilt or modded? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what would cause a tooth to break off a ring gear
not a whole lot I suspect the shift kit the previous owner was talking about was installed by an incompetant mechanic. a th400 may well be a better choice due to the truck having a 454.

Re: what would cause a tooth to break off a ring gear
You can Prob do shift kit delete. Take it to a trans shop and have them put the right check balls and such back in
