How Do I know what my engine is?
My father has a Chevy engine that came out of a 1963 Chevy 3/4 truck. He has been saying for a year or so I can have the 327 that he has to replace the V6 in my 65 GMC.
Now that I am ready to put it in, I want to buy the Clutch Disc, Pilot Bearing and pressure plate and I tried to confirm with him that it is a 327. Now he says that he. "WAS TOLD IT WAS 327.". That tells me he has no idea and is just repeating what he was told. How can I know for sure so I can get what I need for it? I hope someone can give me a tell tale thing to look for so I can be sure. Thanks all for your help... Frustrated in Reno... |

What i learned is that there are two main places to look for stamps. On the rear drivers side of the block, and in the front passenger of the block.
The stamps you find will tell you what the block is, but until you tear it down, could be either a 327/350. All parts are interchangeable. |

Re: How Do I know what my engine is?
you will need to get the numbers off the engine block. you will find a long one w/numbers and letters and another set the will be shorter (a series of numbers). this will twll you what size and factory hp. normally will tell you wheter originally had an auto or manual trans too. if you get the numbers you can do an internet search or post them here

Re: How Do I know what my engine is?
look for the # on the back of the driver side of the block, right under where the head is

Re: How Do I know what my engine is?
Thanks all. I was hoping there would be something easy to tell me what it is. I have my friend who is a Auto Shop Teacher at my sons High School doing me a favor. He is doing the engine swap and keeping the old engine for a rebuild project. That way the kids get a handle on everything from removal, intallation to rebuilds. He is all set for an entire semester of teaching now. He plans on selling the 1965 GMC 305 V6 to raise money for his program.

There is something extremely easy. Just as the others above mentioned, get the numbers off the block.

Thanks Bud. I will check it out when I go to my fathers on Sunday. I cannot even get him to walk 10 feet to his garage and write down the numbers for me, but he can tell me that when he pulled the engine he noticed just today that I need additional parts for an engine he doesn't even know what it is. PULLING MY HAIR OUT RIGHT NO. Thanks again for your info. |

Re: How Do I know what my engine is?
The suffix code that is stamped on the pad in front of the passenger side head, will tell you the original HP rating and trans installed behind it, as well as the vehicle installed in. The casting number on the block behind the drivers side head, is more of a general designation of the cubic inch size of the engine. GM did not install the 327 in these trucks until the '66 model year.
