shockless
Yep thats what I found. Bought a 1969C-30 with a dump bed. Drove it back 65-70 no issues at all. Hauled some lumber and trash stuff from the yard to the landfill mainly just to play with the dump bed. On the way home it starts wheel hopping like crazy above 50 mph. Whats going on here?? So figured it needed shocks even before that cause it floated and had some wheel hop when hitting bumps. I pull into the local auto parts place to get a price on shocks. Not sure which ones to get and unsure what axel was under it figured this is way too easy. Ill just lift the dump bed and look. Guess what I didnt find.....shocks. its got no shocks. Someone may have changed out the acel I would think cause the speedo is 10 slow but theres not any shock mounts on the frame. There is a shock mount on the shock mount on the forward and rear side of the axel and nothing on the frame. Please some advice on 2 things. Why the sudden wheel hop?? U-joint maybe?? Also what to do about not having shocks or even shock mounts. Do you think the shock mounts were removed when the dump bed was installed??? Just confused now hahaha!!!! Thats crazy. What to do??

Re: shockless
Later model 1 ton axles have staggered shocks(one front, one rear. My 1970 C30 had both shocks on the front side of the axle housing originally. Mine had an Eaton HO-72 axle as OEM. When I swapped in the 14 bolt GM axle, I bought some shock tabs from one of the 4X4 websites and removed the GM mounts from the new axle and installed the tabs to position shocks in the original location. The upper shock mounts should be a stud coming off the frame, slighlty forward of the rear axle. Both shocks will angle up and forward from the axle.
And yes, with as stiff as these trucks are sprung in the back, they will wheel hop horribly with bad, broken or missing shocks. |

Re: shockless
Here are where and what the mounts look like. both sides are the same, they are in front of the axle. In 73 they moved one behind the axle to "help" with axle wrap.
