Re: What is the best source to buy a clutch,

And how hard is it to replace a clutch? (66, 6 cyl, 4 speed) I've done this on motorcycles....so the parts are just heavier right?

I bought the shop manual for the 66 but it's just suplimental. What is the main manual I need and will it show how to change the clutch?

Thanks!

Re: What is the best source to buy a clutch,

Buy your clutch local. They are heavy and you don't want to have to pay shipping on it.

Get a complete kit with clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. Have your flywheel resurfaced by any automotive machine or driveline shop while you have it apart.

Swapping the clutch in your truck is the easiest one out there. You remove the transmission but leave the bellhousing in place. Then unbolt the clutch parts and drop them out the bottom of the bellhousing. Most vehicles, you have to remove the bellhousing. GM did this one real well when they designed it.

Re: What is the best source to buy a clutch,

Cool, thanks. Is there a way to improve how the clutch engages or will just replacing the clutch do that? What I mean is, there's about 3/4" of play on the pedal between the transmission being engaged and disengaged. It's OK when I'm moving but gently pulling into my tight garage space is difficult. My 4Runner feels like it has about 3+ inches of play. That's what I'm looking for...I think.

Mess with the adjustment. It's the threaded rod between the z-bar and the fork that comes out of the bellhousing. You can lengthen or shorten it to change the point where the clutch engages. You might be able to adjust it to a point where it feels like you want it to.
