72 swb to trim or not
Father/ Son type project.Brief plan but we know hoe those turn out sometime
1. Get it running and make it mechanically safe. 2. Lower it and put a set of Rally's on it and put my son's business logo on the doors and drive the you know what out of it. I have a complete set of OEM trim for it but I thought that would look kind of goofy with 40 yr old paint and knew trim. If we shave the existing trim and repair the holes we have body filler all over or maybe I get some older trim to finish it up but that would probably take a while and we want to get it Rollin . Opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.Sorry about the upside down pics. How do I turn them right side up? Thanks Kirk Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
buff the paint up as good as you can get it, run your good trim until you get the repaint down the road. It will not look odd because the trim is nice - I understand what you're saying - but I think new trim on old paint would look much better than filled holes simply because of concern over new trim not matching the condition of the truck. MANY of us are driving (or gracing jack stands) with works in progress. My 2 cents.
Here's the real question - if you were finishing up the body right now and applying a slick paint job, would you want the trim or filled holes? If trim, then leave it as is. If no, then you might as well fill them now. Personally, I think it looks better with it, but that's just personal taste - many folks like it without the upper trim. |

Like this... I don't know what you use for a image program but there should be a "rotate" selection in it somewhere. LockDoc

I have an ipad and had the same problem. You have to turn it around 180 degrees to take the photos right side up. Also like LocDoc said, you should have a rotate feature on your image program. |

These trucks look great with upper and lower trim. I would run it.

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
That settles it,I'm going with the polish as best I can and trim it.This actually is an original Highlander pkg truck for whatever that's worth but we just want to make a solid driver out of it and throw some PB goodies at it and make it comfortable to drive.
Thanks for the reply's |

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
There's nothing wrong with having new looking trim, and old paint. In fact, you can run new looking trim, bumpers, mirrors, emblems, grille, etc. and old patina paint, and it's kind of the hot thing right now. With the economy in the crapper, it's a little more sensible to shine and replace smaller pieces and leave the paint, than to spend thousands on a paint job

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Here's my 70 c10 before and after I reinstalled the lower trim. Personally I think they look WAY better with at least the lower trim.

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Sorry Kirk,
You probably are not going to like this but... Like we said last year when you listed this for sale. It is a fairly rare truck being a big block SWB Highlander Promo package "C" truck. The upper moldings are part of the "C" package and the lowers are part of the Custom Deluxe package. The white on white is not often seen and the blue plaid along with the black bits tie everything together nicely. This truck needs to be restored. Thought you had seen the light when you pulled the sale off CL and the classifieds here after finding out what it was. Did you get the original block for it? Even if you do not have the original block a replacement can be found and if you are so inclined a 454 or a stroker could look just as stock. An O/D trans like the 7004R is nice to have and tames the gas consumption if you do your part. :-) If the all white is too much maybe filling in between the upper and lower body side moldings with 510 medium or 523 dark blue as is sometimes seen. It is incorrect but nice and period too as would a set of slot wheels! Just in case you missed it before here is my Highlander blurb and a couple of pictures. Highlander Plaid was a trim only option based on Z62 or Z84 (Blazer only) optioned vehicle. In addition promo packages A,B and C were offered that bundled several options in addition to the Plaid trim. Thus a promo package truck was a Highlander but a Highlander was NOT ALWAYS a promo package equipped truck. Highlander trim codes All include black dash pad, steering column (with or without tilt) and carpet. In addition the door panels, visors, console (Blazer only) and seat belts were parchment (white). Seat vinyl was also parchment and the insert color is determined by the specific code. So the only variable color keyed component was the insert color of the seatcovers. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pickups Custom Deluxe Z62 mandatory option green 613 blue 611 gray 604 orange 618 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Suburbans Custom Deluxe Z62 mandatory option green 647 blue 642 gray 639 orange 651 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Blazer Cheyenne (CST) Z84 mandatory option green 680 blue 677 gray 671 orange 686 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Promo package codes A= YG6 Plaid Trim, Special Wheelcovers C10 (PA1) or Chrome Hubcaps C20-30 (PO3), Chrome Front Bumper, Upper (Belt) Molding, Door Edge Guards and Below Eye-Line Mirrors. B= YG7 Adds Turbo. Automatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. C= YG8 Adds A/C and Tint.

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
I really like the white trucks with uppers and lowers. IMO they look very classy that way, and white is very forgiving of paint flaws. On the other hand, white without the trim looks very plain unless the white paint is flawless with a tint to it. Just my opinion, but I'd love to have that truck to put back to something close to original.

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Hey Kirk, I kinda read this earlier, made a post, and haven't been back for a bit. A highlander, eh? What a great truck, a swb highlander, at that. With that little tidbit, I'm am on board with what Tim said - if there was ever a candidate for a resto, this would be it. Much more rare than a cheyenne super or anything like that.
I'd love to see the SPID, more pics, etc... |

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Yo Jocko and Tomahawk30, The SP is in my previous post pics when I was gonna sell it. We' gonna go with a combo of looks,a little old that being the interior with the Blue Plaid ,some knew being the PB and trim and original with the paint. Just got the heads back and gonna pull the block and get it and the eng bay cleaned up and put back together and go on from there. I know a lot of the purist would like original restoration but my 23 yr old likes the old school shop truck look, I'm just glad he doesn't want a Tooner

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Found your original post from when you picked this one up, and now I REALLY think its worthy of retaining as much originality as possible. I see that you already have a white truck with all the trim, so my earlier comments were probably just preaching to the choir! . Looks to me like a little rust prevention, fresh carpet and trim, and a blue highlander seat cover would do wonders.... Love the truck, and make sure to share lots of pictures whichever way you decide to go!

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
OK, I thought the pictures had posted. Lets try again.
So how do I add a "Restore It" poll? :-) EDIT: The SPID is Stickman's truck the other pictures are incentive pictures of the blue/white/black Highlander trim option.

Re: 72 swb to trim or not
Tim, as long as poll options are:
a) restore it (we're sorry, option "a" is unavailable at this time...) b) give it to jocko c) sell it to jocko d) restore it then give it to jocko Holy cow, what a great truck. I don't see an NL2 RPO - but is that the aux tank gauge switcher above the driver's a/c vent there that I see??? Maybe there just wasn't any room left to list that option.... Holy cow. EDIT: Oops - disregard, I assume that is the man throt. Last edited by jocko; 01-28-2013 at 12:40 AM. |
