Shock extensions/lowered truck

From what I understand when you lower a square you have to buy shock extenders for front and back both , correct?

The flip kit I'm looking at has shock extenders for the back, but where can I get some for the front?

And, can you also use shorter shocks instead of shock extenders on the front?

I'm planning on lowering mine about 4/5.

Thanks guys.

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

Shock extenders are for the rear, as the shock angle gets to flat for them to work effectively.

The front just gets shorter shocks if you use drop springs.

You could mod front shock mounts if you feel you need longer shocks, but I couldn't imagine why.

For the rear you could move your shock mounts forward, and run shorter shocks. Which would be better for handling if your going to push your truck towards the edge on a road course.

Thanks for the info.

I will most likely be using drop spindles and springs on the front, so can I just leave the stock shocks as is on the front?

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

You can often get away with it for awhile if you don't bottom out to much. Just measure the shaft after you drop it, and if you have 2 inches left you'll be fine for awhile.

KYB's are cheap, and are about as good as any shock out there for 3 times the price.

Alright thanks. If I decide to get some KYB's, is there a certain length I need to find?

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

The best way to answer the question correctly is to measure your specific application for the amount of travel you have w/your current combo of parts. The fronts are easy to just relocate the upper mount higher on the frame-rail & use a stock p/n replacement shock.

Check out Performanceonline they carry them.

See if these might work for you

Thanks, but I think I would rather just replace the stock shocks with shorter ones rather than relocating them.

The big difference is less travel w/shorter shocks. OE shock length is about perfect by simply relocating the upper mounting point.

If I want to run shorter shocks, I've still not been able to find out what length I would need.

I'm planning on getting this for the rear, it says it comes with shock extenders.

Can anyone tell me if they see shock extenders in the picture in that link? I don't know what they look like.

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

Djm makes a poor quality flip kit. Use Belltech, mcgaughys, or western chassis. Im not sure if they offer kits with sock extenders.

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

I noticed some flip kits say 5 inch drop and some say 6 inch drop. Is there really a difference? I'm just wanting to do 5.

It depends on the leaf spring thickness as in how many leafs you have, if you have a standard 3/1 leaf it will drop it 5in, if you have the 7/1 it will drop it 6in. Also dont worry about drop shocks with the drop you are doing, its just a waste of money IMO. Stock shocks will work fine with the drop you want to do. The minimum components you will need to drop it right are a set of drop spindles, a set of flip brackets, and shock extenders.

Alright, thanks. It looks like mine is the 3/1. Here is a pic

What confused me was this
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ws...1500/year/1982

In the description it says
Additional features include:

* Axle locator, U-bolts, 6-hole plates, and fasteners
* Allow axle to be relocated for a 6 in. drop

But, that will be good if it just does a 5 inch drop on mine. Any shock extenders for the rear, you can recommend?

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

Yep you have the basic 3/1 leafs. Yea I can understand the confusion, the measurements stated in these kits are really appoximate not 100% dead on.
I would recommend these.

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

you wont need drop shocks on the, with the rubber bump stop removed you can bottem out and still have plenty on compression in the shock. teh rears will get you to about the bump stop mount, van shocks will get you to the frame

Re: Shock extensions/lowered truck

Measure the parts you actually have & confirm if it will/wont work. In this case, measure the amount of compression travel before the shock bottoms out & compare it to the length of the shock @ ride height.

Many comments made on the internet are exceptions rather than common results.
