caddy CTS-V oil pan info

ok, so i had the idea i needed a camaro oil pan here.

turned out i was wrong, has happened from time to time.

caddy oil pan seemed to be a better fit.

i ordered pan 12631828, does come with gasket and bolts and oil pressure fitting already drilled to 1/8npt thread, just plugged with grease fitting.
ordered 12621299 pickup tube
12611129 windage tray
12584737 dipstick
12584738 dipstick tube

showed original LM7 oil pan for reference.

i had seen on the internet that LM7 windage tray and Caddy tray were same part no. but i ordered it anyway. you know one of them have to see deals.

the parts are very similar all bolt holes in same places, only very little bend and cutout differences, could have gotten by without this part. but i put it in anyway i own it now

ok the pickup tubes are a lot different in size, we should hope so looking at the pans. the o-ring clip on the LM7 is floating ring, while the caddy one is welded. pickup tube does come with o-ring already on it.

i did add an extra M6-1.0 X 15mm bolt with fender washer to the other side of the oil pump where the pickup bolts in. factory only bolts up to one side, so i added bolt to the other side. it was already drilled and tapped, why not use it.

if you plan on using the oil level switch, i was going to make an idiot light on the dash with mine. the switch that comes with the caddy pan is different than the LM7 switch.

the LM7 switch is 2 pin and the caddy switch is 3 pin.

and the best i can tell with mutimeter, LM7 switch is normally closed contact with no oil in pan, and caddy switch has normally open and closed contacts

found this picture on the web, where they made a plate to cover both sides, i used factory tab on one side plus added bolt and fender washer on other side.

Thanks for the breakdown! Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about the Camaro pan, and in what way did the CTS-V pan fit better? I think this thread will be of great help to myself and many other to come who are trying to decide what pan to use!

So which year trucks will this work with? Would I need to just notch the crossmember in my 64 to use it?

sorry didnt go into the camaro pan indepth, the camaro pan comes farther forward than the caddy pan. its not by much but it did make a difference on my truck.

dont know about a 64 frame, i am running a 79 chassis with a crossmember from scotts hot rods.

I need to change out my 5.3 deep pan for the CTS-V pan. Can I remove it with the engine in place or do I have to jack the engine up?

Is your engine in the factory sbc location or moved forward?

Probably going to have to lift the motor up just my opinion. When I mocked up this conversion it had the truck pan on and I sat there and studied it thinking about how far the motor needed to go up to swap the pan knowing that the pan would not drop down low enough to clear the bell housing and x member.

i am betting you will have to jack engine up, the oil pickup tube will get in the way of putting the pan on with engine in place.

not a big pain at all, wiggle pickup little bit while pushing up on it and went right in.

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but do you remember what the difference was between the oil dipstick tubes?

I originally had a Lokar dipstick with the 5.3 Vortec pan. When I replaced it with the CTS-V pan the dipstick was too short. I contacted Lokar and they sent me a longer cable. I'm pretty sure it is for an LS-1 application. I think Lokar charged $12 for the longer cable. Hope this helps you.

BTW as to my original post, I had to jack the front of the engine up and pull the transmission away from the engine to get the new pan installed. Pain in the ass job but worth it since my pan does not hang below the crossmember like the stock 5.3 pan did.

The reason I ask is because I was thinking that maybe the truck dipstick tube could be trimmed on the bottom to work with the shorter dipstick. But that would only work if the length of the tubes outside of the block are the same.

I'm using the Ctsv pan with truck dip stick and tube. I just fill oil to the cad pan spec and make a mental note where the oil is on the truck stick. Been running this for almost a year with no problems.

i checked all my pictures and i guess i missed a compare shot of the the dipsticks.

so i took one of it in the engine bay. the yellow dipstick to the left is the CTS-V one and the yellow dipstick on the right is the truck LM7 one.

big difference is total length and mounting location.

My question would be, how much of either dipstick goes down into the pan? If both measurements are the same, you should be able to use either. Just my $.02.

thats the part i didnt photograph before assembly, i think they are relatively the same height, but cant confirm that.

Good to know. The dipstick and tube are cheap enough, might as well just get them to match the pan.
